President Trump Announces Reopening of Some States as Soon as April

President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that he would be reopening some states as early as April.

The president revealed his plans during a press conference in the Rose Garden.

The day will be very close. … It’s going to be very, very close, maybe even before the date of May 1st,” Trump said.

The president reaffirmed the reopening dates would vary from state to state, depending on the level of coronavirus infections.

“Actually there are over 20 that are in extremely good shape, and we think we’re going to be able to get them open fairly quickly, and others will follow,” Trump said.

The president said that the federal government would provide each state with assistance.

“The federal government will be watching them very closely, and we’ll be there to help,” he said.

The president said he would work with blue state governors like Gov. Andrew Cuomo to reopen their states and give them the necessary resources.

“We’re all set, as I said, the governors will be opening up their states, they’re going to declare when,” he said. “Some can open very, very shortly, if not almost immediately.”

The president opened his remarks by citing progress against the coronavirus pandemic.

“We grieve at every precious life that has been lost to the invisible enemy, but through the darkness, we see those rays of light,” he said.

Good to hear this. 20k lost lives are tragic (if that many actually died from CV), but 20 MILLION are now without jobs. How much death and destruction will come from that, if not corrected quickly.

That may not mean much as it appears it may be a moot point as several states seem prepared to move ahead to do it anyway with or without fed approval. Guess it'll be like the old saying 'guess we'll see you in court but in the meantime it's balls to the wall'. Even if a federal judge issues a stay the states involved just needn't enforce those violating the current rules and orders currently in effect so the fed may as well get with it.

• Nationally, the percent of laboratory specimens testing positive for influenza at clinical laboratories continued to decrease and is now low.
• ILI activity continued to decrease nationally but remains elevated.

• 166 influenza-associated deaths in children have been reported so far this season. This number is high compared to recent seasons, but remains lower than the 2017-2018 season during which 188 pediatric deaths were reported.
• CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 39 million flu illnesses, 410,000 hospitalizations and 24,000 deaths from flu.
• Antiviral medications are an important adjunct to flu vaccine in the control of influenza. Almost all (>99%) of the influenza viruses tested this season are susceptible to the four FDA-approved influenza antiviral medications recommended for use in the U.S. this season.
• With ongoing declines in influenza activity and the continued effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on outpatient ILI and P&I mortality data, this will be the final week of a full FluView report.
