Senators Look to Bolster Firearm Background Check System as Sales Go Through the Roof

A number of Republican Senators are looking to bolster the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS])after back-to-back record-setting sales months in March and April.

"In response to the pandemic, millions of Americans practicing safe social distancing have lined up outside of firearm retailers in order to purchase firearms. The resulting record-breaking surge has placed significant pressure on the National Instant Criminal Background System (NICS), which helps to ensure that criminals and other prohibited persons cannot gain access to firearms," Texas Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn wrote in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray this week. More than two-dozen other Senators also signed on.

"As our country continues to respond to the pandemic, we are seeking additional information on the impact the coronavirus has had on your agencies and the firearm transfer process so that we have a clearer picture on where things stand and how we can better assist through the legislative and appropriations process," the letter continues.

In March 3.7 million firearms were sold, breaking the all-time record. In April, 1.7 million firearms went out the door, a 71.3 percent increase over the previous year.

The demand has caused a backlog in the system and created unlawful waiting periods for purchasers.

FBI breaks the law by keeping a record of the check. Congress wants to make sure the FBI gest paid and has the resources for this registry.

They should pass a law making it illegal to get COVID.

“... Americans across the country have been frustrated with excessive gun control laws during the Wuhan coronavirus crisis.”

Mostly, democrats trying to buy guns thru Amazon...with free, next day shipping.

How many people are actually flagged by this background check thingy. Seems to me nobody who would be flagged would be stupid enough to try to buy a gun that way.

What are they going to bolster? Add political affiliation’ religion, and race as important qualifying questions?

False flags and how many are acted on when an actual flag pops up? REAL bad guys don’t go to Cabelas to get their guns.

We have the State Police show up to apprehend prohibited persons on a regular basis.

“Seems to me nobody who would be flagged would be stupid enough to try to buy a gun that way.”

Many people don’t understand the rules. For instance, a simple arrest 20 years ago when in a divorce can lead to a no buy record.

Ah for the good old days of pre-1968! Cash and carry. No paperwork, no background check, no waiting period. You just had to look old enough.
Available at grocery stores, hardware stores, book stores, clothing stores, gas stations, farmer Joe’s kitchen table, sporting goods stores, bus stations, pawn shops.

Or you could choose one from a magazine add, drop a check in the mail and have one on your doorstep in a few days.
Even anti-tank rifles were for sale along with “dewat” machine guns.

Then came the democrats and grabbed them all.

Question for my fellow freepers? Is the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS]) defacto gun registration? My State, VA says that if my gun is lost or stolen I have to report it within 48 hrs. If my gun turned up at a crime scene how would they know it was mine unless the NICS is keeping a registry of who owns the guns. Registration comes just before confiscation....

” Is the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS]) defacto gun registration?”

More or less. You just answered your own question. If your gun shows up at the scene of a crime expect a visit. In Kali its done at the state level and registration is tied to your DL#. I have heard the PD on scanner trying to run weapons owner ship thru the DMV records. The info they were getting back wasn’t very complete and somewhat vague.

The ATF when tracing a serial number starts with the manufacturer, goes to the distributor, goes to the retailer and then to the purchaser who filled out Form 4473. Form 4473 is not supposed to be a registration, but it is in reality.
Private sales with no paperwork fouls that up.
That’s why they are pushing “universal background checks”.

> get RID of the illegal ATF and its unconstitutional firearms “regulations"

Except it's not just the ATF, our contemporary FeralGovernment™ is an unconstitutional administrative state of alphabet soup agencies, which promulgate laws via regulations written by unaccountable mandarins ...

Maybe they should spend their time thinking about WHY guns sales have gone through the roof. Hint: it has something to do with Comrade Mayors and Comrade Governors trashing the Bill of Rights.

understood. agree that much of the fed govt is unconstitutional and needs to be examined and corrected, fixed.
(however, the ATF insofar as firearms is concerned... is especiallly-blatantly violative of our Constitution and liberties since “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

ps: some of the other unconstitutional fed programs should be terminated forthwith as wasteful, corrupt, or useless. Others that are more useful should be transferred to the states and then the individual states can decide whether to continue, modify, or end them. if they are to proceed, they belong at the state or local level and NOT in WashDC, which is supposed to be a government of LIMITED (delegated only) powers.
