Respiratory virus shedding in exhaled breath and efficacy of face masks

We identified seasonal human coronaviruses, influenza viruses and rhinoviruses in exhaled breath and coughs of children and adults with acute respiratory illness. Surgical face masks significantly reduced detection of influenza virus RNA in respiratory droplets and coronavirus RNA in aerosols, with a trend toward reduced detection of coronavirus RNA in respiratory droplets. Our results indicate that surgical face masks could prevent transmission of human coronaviruses and influenza viruses from symptomatic individuals.

OK, so on April 3 masks became a means of reducing transmission of viruses. If, that is, you believe this article - and, to be honest, that’s just common sense that it would help, though be woefully imperfect.

So then why did the phucking CDC tell everyone before that NOT to wear masks? WTF kind of experts are they if they got something so damned simple, so damned wrong? Why does ANYONE without their CLEAR political agenda listen to them, anyway?

I was just about to post that same paragraph. It seems to me that the bottom line is that surgical masks might be effective for sick people in a hospital, but not necessary for healthy people in public. It also suggests that most “lockdown” measures are unnecessary. And that keeping people cooped up at home probably increases the spread.

This is all consistent with other studies. “The science” does not support lockdowns or masks for the general public.

Surgeon general explains evolution of CDC face mask guidance

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams explained the CDC began advising that symptomatic people wear face masks at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then as science showed that the virus could manifest in people as presymptomatic and asymptomatic, the organization expanded its guidance that all people wear face coverings when outside the home. “even a simple mask offers some protection.”

Exactly. Nothing is perfect, but you can improve your odds by simple, common sense, actions. Cumulatively, several different actions could significantly reduce the odds of getting sick - with the WuFlu or anything else that gets passed through droplets. That’s all that anyone is saying.

I cannot breathe wearing the stupid mask. Shopping is a pain because I have to keep pulling it up to make it stay in place or down to breathe. Being claustrophobic does not help.

I should probably make some masks.

Don’t you find it odd the US has so many more cases by an exaggerated amount than other countries. Could it be that we get paid $3,500 per case reported and $35,000 per case on a ventilator. I wonder how much NY got paid for every homicidal death they caused by allowing Covid 19 patients returned to the nursing homes. This has been like Infanticide of defenseless babies, but now it is the killing of the defenseless elderly. Wake up America.

Good, that is YOUR personal choice. No one should criticize you for doing so ... and you should not criticize others for not wearing one.

It is frightening how people can freely surrender their freedoms in the name of safety.

I agree with your concern. I left California, years ago, and immediately noticed how happy I was to not have those lighted freeway threat signs. Now, they’re in my state, too.

We wanted Nannies in our Government, and now we’ve got the Nanny State. If we are honest we would admit that, in general, men want freedom and women want security.

As far as masks (and this virus) goes, I want Trump to succeed. I am convinced that his solution is the most pro-freedom we would ever see. He wants to get out of this, and the rest of DC just wants to milk this on all four teats. I don’t think that ANYONE actually knows what will work, or what is necessary.

I am not losing sight, either, of the fact that China is responsible for this and is the real threat to our freedoms.

Simple test, regardless of where you are in Asia:

1. Put on your mask, and peel an orange.
2. Did you smell the orange?
3. If yes, congratulations you would catch Covid if near aerosolized virus particles.
4. If no, you’re wearing full Hazmat suit.

Covid aerosol particles are less than 2.5 microns in size. Show me a surgical mask - or N95 - that seals smaller than that.

Those who are carriers of Covid (or flu for that matter) should indeed wear a mask to reduce their viral shedding in public.

Some people can’t wear masks expecially if they have medical conditions.

The other thing I was thinking of, you probably spread more particles when you speak as opposed to just normal breathing. So in your case, you could wear one below the nose, just cover your mouth.

One Berkeley study said if 80% of us wore masks it would dramatically reduce the spread of Coronavirus. So maybe not “everybody” needs to, but everybody who can should.

I believe it would bring our economy back much much faster, because once it stops spreading in an area then consumer confidence comes back.

One thing’s for sure: a mask can cover up a lot of ugly.

Well I completely understand this point.

Not sure whether to be concerned about having everyone wearing a cheap mask whenever they are in public, when the country is setting world records for exposure to a previously unknown contagious virus, which is running out of control among the US population.

But I definitely understand the ever-expanding legal oversight concern

Bigtime. I am comfortable it is temporary.

Maybe I should not be.

It is fascinating, how many otherwise perfectly reasonable people, are hung up about masks.

Some say they will not wear one because they are not sick. But if people can have and spread the virus without symptoms, how would someone know they aren't spreading it everywhere?
Some say they can't wear a mask for medical reasons. Okay, but I know 50-70% of the people in my area not wearing masks while shopping don't have that problem.

I personally wear a mask when around others for 3 reasons:

Also I'm in Texas and we never had lockdowns or wearing a face mask forced down our throats, at least in my area. It was strongly encouraged.
Maybe that's partly the difference.

They can do their thing, I'll do mine.

There is a strong tradition of resistance to authority by Americans, which the Left and the news media have endorsed in the Trump era. With the economy, employment, and personal incomes wrecked by the coronavirus lockdown, the result is increasing disregard of government pandemic directives at all levels as a way of protesting the lockdown.

I have done certain things for years. I never touch grocery baskets. I figured out years ago that most of my colds were coming from grocery baskets so I pull a plastic bag out of my trunk and throw it around the handle. I don’t wear a mask. I can’t breathe with one and they bug me. If I’m touching it all the time because it bugs me I don’t see what good it does. And I’m not sick so I’m not going to wear one. But I have noticed how many people have turned it into....mask = good person, you care about people. No mask = bad horrible person who wants people to die! 🤷‍♀️

“Spend so very much time and effort, trying to avoid the one thing which seems so completely common sense.”

I agree. It seems as obvious as the nose on one’s face that a mask would help you from catching and from spreading the virus. Any barrier even if not 100% effective has to help.
