Nike has an exclusive contract with the NFL until 2028. I expect there are detailed contracts stating what its obligations are to the league and teams. The owners of the Redskins have to decide whether to roll over or enforce their legal rights.

The Redskins probably have no "legal rights" under the terms of that contract. NFL team apparel is licensed through the NFL, not the individual teams. This spreads the sales revenues among all teams, not just the ones who sell the most licensed apparel.

I'll bet the Redskins apparel isn't anywhere near among the most popular in the league, either.
