Shoveling a grave is backbreaking work

ur olds fashioned ... most of us would use a backhoe, is quicker too.

Commercial Fishermen could set an old pot with a body somewhere 60 fathoms deep

I am well aware of the developing scene in which police oversight of law and order in tne community is begoming deficient, even discouraged by other govermental inluences, and I share your passion concerning that. Butng you have allowed your feeling to outstrip the definition of the word, which I gave you, and also in suming up the example I gave you. In both you are unarguably wrong.

Kyle was a perfect instance in which he joined a vigilante group, obtained a firearm from them, and was assigned to keep another proprietor's property secure. He got into a fracas because his stance was in anticipation of exactly some unlawful act toward another's real estate being perpetrated. Regardless of the outcome, he was acting as a vigilante.

The situation changed when it became personal, but it was because of his presence at the business site, and his stance as an armed vigilante that he invited the attention of his attackers. That would not have happened otherwise.

So, to say it once more, you simply do not want to accept the plain definition of what a vigilante is. Nothing in your rant disproves what I wrote.

This debate is over.

It may be deemed “vigilante”, but here in the State of Washington it is legal to use reasonable force to protect the life and property of another.

In Washington, is it lawful to appoint oneself as a seeker of opportunities to dispense deadly justice? Or was that a merely a disclaimer you neglected to mention?

??????
I put up a similar sign after Katrina - said we were an armed neighborhood and looters would be shot...had my .357 strapped to my hip as I posted it at the end of the street and a State Trooper happened to be cruising the area - he stopped, looked at the sign, looked at me, touched the brim of his hat and drove on...

Worrying about “Being warned for talking tough” is no different than kneeling and kissing their rings.

We have too may knee-prone ring kissers here these days.

RCW 9A.16.110

Defending against violent crime—Reimbursement.

(1) No person in the state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting by any reasonable means necessary, himself or herself, his or her family, or his or her real or personal property, or for coming to the aid of another who is in imminent danger of or the victim of assault, robbery, kidnapping, arson, burglary, rape, murder, or any other violent crime as defined in RCW 9.94A.030.

Several years ago there was a guy that would dress up in a super-hero outfit and roam the streets of Seattle helping people. He would stop muggings, fights, etc. Built up a group of folks that would pose as homeless and hang out at street-corners to notify him of stuff.

https://mynorthwest.com/1299501/seattle-superhero-phoenix-jones-retiring/

Phoenix Jones. He was arrested several times for “assault” but was never convicted. He knew his rights and the law. After ten years he is “retiring”.

There is seeking opportunities and then there’s responding to a days and weeks ongoing organized armed violent mob being ALLOWED by authority to rampage.

I will say what nickcarraway said, backed up by the 1st amendment (and the 2nd):

"...YOU LOOT

Given contemporary prosecutors and prosecution, my inclination would be to not install a sign.

Thank you for a clear dispassionate answer to my question, with a citation and an example. The issue was the definition of vigilantism and the cost of being involved in it. I believe the local response to it depends on the state or perhaps even the county in which the action is taking place.

Apparently some others have replied burdening themselves with the wrong presumption that somehow I was against all forms of vigilantism. I am not, but the situation can prove costly to the one who deliberately participates in it.

In the recent Kenosha "protests," Kyle Rittenhouse was clearly engaged in vigilante action.

Bull crap! He was watching over a business property for a friend. That business owner could have hired someone to do the same. There is no legal comparison to vigilantism there.

As for the shootings, he was no longer engaged in protecting the property he was on his own rendering first aid to injured "protesters" when he was attacked and he retreated as best he could from the attack. After he defended his life from that child-molesting felon he was chased and attacked again. And he defended his life again.

Something for the visually challenged. For even larger images, move your monitor within an inch or so of your face.

“...but the situation can prove costly to the one who deliberately participates in it.”

I’m guessing that those court cases cost the “superhero” in Seattle a pretty penny. Getting involved in a third-party situation can be tricky - who started what? And of course the risk to your loved ones if they are there, and even if they are not. Do you risk your life for a stranger, but end up leaving your wife and three kids to fend for themselves?

All questions to ask BEFORE you end up having to decide. And not talking “vigilantism” per se, but just everyday life.

There is an odd property in Washington state. A wall of 4x8 plywood near the front - I think the driveway gate is also made of plywood - sort of like a stockade (8 feet tall).

Scrawled in large spray-painted letters on the plywood fence: “Nothing back here is worth your life!”

Taking of property=reparations so it’s approved activity now.

It flies in the face of every principle of natural and civil law. IOW it is anarchy and terror. The hallmark of Marxist revolution.
