My first thought.
Here in NJ gubmint workers, who in the past were often young people starting out in first jobs before moving on to other things, have become a political entity unto themselves with massive political clout - and they consistently vote themselves more and more of our paychecks. Never mind the salaries and health benefits; the retirement costs & health benefits (for many people who can retire in their 50s while living into their 80s) are an albatross no new business wants to take on. They are now our upper middle class, as real jobs leave coupled with foreigners being trafficked here to suppress wages.
It is falling apart because the “makers” (taxable workers and businesses) are fleeing, leaving no tax base; low-wage jobs don’t produce much tax revenue, and certainly don’t let workers buy homes - and those homes supplied most of the municipal tax revenue. When I was younger people touted how much improvements to homes would increase the value; now they know better, as high taxes keep prices comparatively low. Potential buyers realize they are just renting homes from the gubmint worker caste, and buy elsewhere instead - giving the Dems a lock on populous but poor state.
When I was younger we also lived among many retirees who had paid off their homes and lived in them until they died; that is no longer the case because the taxes are too high for their fixed incomes. NJ freezes their property taxes at retirement/65, but they are already high - and they must pay the new going rate up front before receiving a refund of the difference a year later.
Much of the same is occurring in NY as well; the area is falling apart, and there is little money to maintain an infrastructure that started in the 1600s.

Understand completely. I live in a State with less than a million people, and no income tax, but that doesn’t stop the State from having ideas the size and shape of New York and New Jersey.
The State recently received a 1.2 or 1.3 Billion dollar gift from the taxpayers via the Federal Government and the great majority of it went to prop up State Government agencies rather than “We the People”. In other words our miniscule State acts just like New York or New Jersey when it comes to finance.
Well I’d better preface that. Our State retirement system is probably second to none. It is fully funded and then some. In addition, people are moving here, unlike the two States you mentioned, but that isn’t necessarily a positive depending on how long it takes the move ins to turn a generally conservative State into the one they escaped from.

Even taking race out of the equation, just looking at it as a psychotic episode, imagine what will happen post-SHTF when at least 5% of the population who are on some kind of anti-psychotic drugs go off their meds cold-turkey at the same time, all during a period of unprecedented social stress and chaos.
At least about one in 20 of your fellow citizens will be hearing voices telling them that you are trying to kill them, etc.
