LBJ’s margin was so large he must have gotten over 50% of the white vote—the last Democrat to do so. I was thinking in terms of electoral votes where a small number of votes in a given state could determine the outcome. Truman had 303 electoral votes vs. 189 for Dewey and 39 for Thurmond. Kennedy also had 303 electoral votes vs. 219 for Nixon and 15 for Harry F. Byrd. There were 6 more electoral votes in 1960 because Alaska and Hawaii had become states in the 1950s.
