AP sources: Trump signs funding measure, averts shutdown

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump has signed a $900 billion pandemic relief package that will deliver long-sought cash to businesses and individuals. It also averts a government shutdown.

Two people familiar with the president’s action tell The Associated Press that the president has signed the measure. They are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and requested anonymity.

The massive bill includes $1.4 trillion to fund government agencies through September and contains other end-of-session priorities such as money for cash-starved transit systems and an increase in food stamp benefits.

Democrats are promising more aid to come once President-elect Joe Biden takes office, but Republicans are signaling a wait-and-see approach.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

The fate of an end-of-year COVID-19 relief and spending bill remained in doubt Sunday as millions lost unemployment aid, the government barreled toward a mid-pandemic shutdown and lawmakers implored President Donald Trump to act.

Trump blindsided members of both parties and upended months of negotiations when he demanded last week that the package — already passed the House and Senate by large margins and believed to have Trump’s support — be revised to include larger relief checks and scaled-back spending.

If he continues his opposition, the federal government will run out of money at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday while he spends the holidays golfing in Florida.

Call me a moron who can’t read, but AP articles are hard for me to understand: He signs the pandemic relief package. Then lower down they write “If he continues his opposition, the federal government will run out of money at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday”. So he signed it but he didn’t sign it

Supported him all the way, but this is a betrayal of America First. THE MOVEMENT IS BIGGER THAN HIM.

IDK. What leverage does he have with this redlining process?

What part of they were going to override his veto don’t you understand??

He held it up long as he could and got some concessions. That’s how he operates.

He’s smarter than you.

I will send back to Congress a redlined version, item by item, accompanied by the formal rescission request to Congress insisting that those funds be removed from the bill.

What does the above mean? Does it mean he signed provisionally, that unless the redlined provisions are changed his signature is recinded??

He's invoking the Impoundment Control Act of 1974.

I will have to read up on that one but it appears to give the President the ability to redline the bill and removing funds from the bill on the redlined items.

I trust Trump made the best deal possible and will wait to hear from him before rendering judgment.

Are you talking about unemployment? My brother is on that, he’s one of those lucky ones who works, or should I say worked in the restaurant biz, and he’s totally freaking out because his 26 weeks of UI ran out this week and all extended benefits ended today Dec. 27th, perfect timing. So that extra $300 a week they are talking about he is not going to get AND eviction protection ends this week as well! Hey but at least Pakistan will get $10 million for gender studies. That warms his heart.
