OpenAI's Sam Altman: Artificial Intelligence will generate enough wealth to pay each adult $13,500 a year

Artificial intelligence will create so much wealth that every adult in the United States could be paid $13,500 per year from its windfall as soon as 10 years from now.

So says Sam Altman, co-founder and president of San Francisco-headquartered, artificial intelligence-focused nonprofit OpenAI.

"My work at OpenAI reminds me every day about the magnitude of the socioeconomic change that is coming sooner than most people believe," Altman, who posted Tuesday. "Software that can think and learn will do more and more of the work that people now do."

Altman calls it an "AI revolution," and compares it in magnitude to the agricultural, industrial and computational technological revolutions. "The technological progress we make in the next 100 years will be far larger than all we've made since we first controlled fire and invented the wheel," he wrote.

The government needs to respond accordingly. "If public policy doesn't adapt accordingly, most people will end up worse off than they are today," Altman said.

However, if the government collects and redistributes the wealth that AI will generate, AI's exponential productivity gains could "make the society of the future much less divisive and enable everyone to participate in its gains," Altman says.

AI will enable computer programs to "read legal documents" and "give medical advice" in the next five years; in the next 10 computers will "do assembly-line work" and "maybe even become companions," Altman wrote. "And in the decades after that, [AI] will do almost everything, including making new scientific discoveries that will expand our concept of 'everything.'"

As the pace of development accelerates, AI "will create phenomenal wealth" but at the same time the price of labor "will fall towards zero," Altman said.

How is AI going to clean my garage and get all the mechanical work sitting in there waiting to be done done?

Either a culture becomes more productive or it becomes poorer. AI, despite popular apocalyptic science fiction, is nothing more than more efficient technology.

Cool, $13,500 dollars a year and no job.

It’s like these guys have lost all understanding of how economies “work” or why we have them?

Magickal AI and unicorn farts won’t make money grow on trees. If you do - it devalues the currency so that $13k effectively becomes 0

"as soon as 10 years from now"

Runaway inflation from the Fed's printing money will revalue that $13,500 to $1.35.

Someone has to create, program and maintain the machines that will free everyone from work and make everyone super rich and lazy.

Why would anyone bother to do ANY work? Everything is now free! You get your money if you work on AI or if you stay home watching Who’s Yo Daddy. So the system falls apart before it starts.

Some are going to say that we just have to make the robots so smart they maintain and program themselves. The robots will be totally autonomous and independent forever.

To anyone who thinks it’s possible to reach that level of programming skill, I have some old RCA 501 octal code for sale.

No thanks.

If we add the word "unskilled" in front of the word "labor," and speak time t in the limit as t → ∞, he's right.

The AI will generate CRYPTO money to pay everyone that wealth. All as fake as a 3 dollar bitcoin.

Yes. It will generate the “windfall” by putting hordes of people out of work.

In 2019 Altman held a fundraiser at his house in San Francisco for Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang.

In May 2020 Altman donated $250k to American Bridge 21st century, a Super-PAC supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Maybe the end game is for AI to vote for Dem you, because that's what it KNOWS you want to do.

A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellas with compassion and vision

We'll be clean, when their work is done
We'll be eternally free, yes, and eternally young

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

There will be things the Deep State wants to manufacture that will be generated in vast quantities very cheaply, but there will be things the Deep State doesn’t want manufactured; an underground “no robot” economy for these things will develop.

Eventually the majority of robot CPU cycles will be expended maintaining security measures over the humans who want to exercise their own free wills and do what they want.

If the government collects wealth and redistributes it o everyone there is no way that 13500 is going to actually be 13500 nor will the resulting sum actually have 13500 in value. More like zero.
