Wasn’t that the storm where Kathryn Hepburn’s family home was destroyed?

Yes, it was. A good documentary on the 1938 New England Hurricane can be found here:

It's unusual to be talking about a hurricane that can't 'hit' me.

I'm prompted by the forecasted landing to remember the night I spent in the graveyard at Montauk Point after I drank enough to miss the ferry back to the New London sub base.

Good luck to all in it's path.

Definitely a different vibe when the storm isn't threatening us in hurricane alley.

My parents honeymooned at Montauk Point.

Thanks for the thread—they keep moving the track further west—looks like we are going to get a ton of rain in northern CT—and tropical storm force winds as well.

Might be time to let some almost ready garden veggies finish ripening inside... :-)

We need to do the same.

Anything that I don’t want to drown in the garden needs to come in.

I just brought in the outdoor furniture, collected a bunch of almost ready to go veggies and got them inside on window-sills, and used some wood to weigh down some loose items that will remain outside....

Flashlights, check—transistor radio, check—batteries, check—bottled water, lots of that—six gallon water containers for flushing toilets, all set—not that much in the freezer since the grocery shopping day was Monday, so should be good at least for a tropical storm.

Interesting:

Jun 1, 2021 Hurricane season starts today: Is Long Island ‘overdue’ for a direct hit?

A hurricane has not made landfall on Long Island in 36 years, but the odds are still low, even in a more active than normal hurricane season

Hurricane Gloria, a Category 4 hurricane when it made its first landfall in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, was a Category 2 hurricane when it made its second landfall on Long Island on Sept. 27, 1985. Packing gusts of up to 115 mph across eastern Long Island, it ripped off roofs, toppled trees and power lines and left three-quarters of a million people without power, some for nearly two weeks. The storm surge destroyed 48 homes on Long Island. Gloria caused widespread crop damage estimated at about $20 million.

Other hurricanes that made landfall in the last century were: Belle on Aug. 11, 1976 (Category 1), Donna on Sept. 11, 1950, the “Great Atlantic Hurricane” on Sept. 14, 1944 and the infamous “Long Island Express” on Sept. 21, 1938, a devastating Category 3 storm that caused 60 deaths and hundreds of injuries in New York and more than 682 across New England, destroying more than 57,000 homes.

(Gloria is the only Hurricane I’ve ever gone thru )
