From 1945 to the present day, the United States has been the world's dominant power, militarily, economically, and culturally. But a lot of people realize that this is changing, and soon, China will probably be the dominant power.
Perhaps you saw the news a few days ago about how Boston Celtics games have been removed from Chinese media after Celtics forward Enes Kantor made a video about the oppression of Tibet? As China is the NBA's biggest emerging market, it would be naïve to think that Kantor isn't in for an unpleasant word from the Celtics' owner and/or manager.
Or perhaps you remember back in May how the actor and WWE wrestler John Cena was cajoled into telling his Chinese fans that he was "very sorry" for calling Taiwan a country? "I made a mistake," he said, "It's so, so, so, so, so, so important — I love and respect Chinese people ..."
When China is the world's dominant commercial power and also cares deeply about the ideological purity of those it does business with, it is only natural that the tendrils of the Chinese Communist Party will reach across the ocean and strangle freedom of speech in distant lands.
Despite the minor embarrassment of COVID-19, Chinese power and prestige are rising steeply. And let's be honest here: even COVID isn't as wholly Chinese a problem as some naïve Americans like to think.
Were the Chinese scientists in the lab from which the virus probably escaped doing things that would have been illegal in the United States? You bet. But you've also got to remember that the experiments were funded by American government money, while American virologists like Anthony Fauci were talking up the need for "gain of function" research and downplaying its hazards.

Everyone thought we won the cold war when Reagan, Thatcher and Pope John-Paul II worked together to finally topple the USSR.
But communism did not go away.
Do you think that Ted Kennedy was the only Democrat working with the communists to defeat Reagan and capitalism?
Today, Pope Francis supports communism. Putin is still KGB, murdering political opponents. China is now a wealthy superpower and the Democrats are fully working with the communists in Russia and China to restore the dream of global communism.
Biden we’ll be dead.
No reason to fear our business partners; they are also role models for most American politicians. It all started when they weren’t “Red China” anymore, and the one-child policy (complete with forced abortions) was seen as a goal instead of a horror.
If I lived in Taiwan I’d be doing my best to put an ocean between myself and Red China...
We wore down our military and almost bankrupted our country with 20 years of trying to make Iraq and Afghanistan something they can never be. As a people we are hopelessly, completely divided. Someone else will have to oppose China because we don't have the will or the means to do it anymore.
“Putin is still KGB, murdering political opponents.”
Get off the hate-Russia bandwagon, it is a media and Deep State invention. There was no Russian ‘collusion’ with Trump, never happened and other than their backyard, Russia doesn’t bother us at all.
The media and the entire Left HATE Putin for the same reason they HATE the leaders of Poland and Hungary...they all work to prevent gays from recruiting little kids - that simple. Putin didn’t become our ‘enemy’ until 2014, right after he signed that law in Russia.
As to ‘journalists’ who try to subvert the Russian government, I prefer Russia’s approach - we had an election stolen and the ‘journalists’ here STILL will not address it - so what’s the point of a ‘free’ press when it’s used to subvert a country?
But what Russia doesn’t have is 1000 political prisoners rotting away in jail as we do - and, again, our wonderful ‘journalists’ ignoring it (along with ignoring the families of the hundreds still trapped in Afghanistan, or the millions of Weegars in China).
Bottom line - China is STRONG, very strong - if they’re not way ahead of us in GNP today, it’s because we’re measuring it wrong. Look at whose running circles around us in consumption of raw materials like steel and concrete and power production (pretty much doubling our numbers now), look at who is, and has been, selling cars at twice our rate, and building Navy ships at 5 times our rate.
The time for ‘perfect’ friends is over. Russia may not be a Jeffersonian Democracy (are we, even, ever been?), but China is FAR MORE of a threat, to my kids at least.
Good post.
Very good.
This is what happens when you drop tariffs and offshore industry. WE DESERVE 3rd world status.
Well said Sir. Spot on.
The Democracy part is getting more and more problematic.
