McConnell says he’ll vote against Jackson for Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell announced Thursday that he will vote against confirming Ketanji Brown Jackson, saying he “cannot and will not” support the groundbreaking nominee for a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court.

While McConnell’s opposition was not unexpected and Jackson’s confirmation is still on track, his declaration coming only hours after the Senate Judiciary Committee wrapped up four days of hearings probably will lead many fellow Republicans to follow suit.

Democrats can confirm Jackson, the first Black woman nominated for the nation’s highest court, without any GOP support in the 50-50 Senate, where Vice President Kamala Harris can cast the tiebreaking vote.

McConnell slammed the liberal groups that have supported Jackson, and he criticized her for refusing to take a position on the size of the nine-member court, even though that decision is ultimately up to Congress. Some advocacy have pushed for enlarging the court after three of President Donald Trump’s nominees cemented a conservative majority.

At lunch, I heard some people on some talk show, Daily Blast, I think, just gushing how brace she was, and how impressive she was to have risen to such a lofty position. All the praise was about overcoming her personal circumstances. Not one remark noted her judicial acumen or intellect.

Tells me she’s got the votes for confirmation and therefore he’s safe to vote this way. The three shrews will vote for her, Romney, Murkowski, and Collins will all vote for her. Her nomination is locked and McConnell knows that.

I have been thinking the same thing. Manchin and Romney will probably cancel out each other’s vote. I think a few Rinos will vote for confirmation.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on Manchin breaking ranks... he only broke ranks before after he was given the all clear to do so (his vote no longer mattered).

He’s still a Democrat...

I wonder how Manchin will vote.

He'll vote for her. Why wouldn't he?

It’s scary that this woman was a sitting judge prior to this, in any jurisdiction.
No kidding - she belongs in a bowling alley pushing a broom.

He would have voted to confirm Garland. It’s a wreath for your head, similar to Laurel.

He can't. McConnell killed the ability to filibuster Supreme Court nominees in 2017.

We likely cannot stop her selection, right? This just stinks to me of him making a weaselly stand because he knows there is no stopping her nomination, and he wants to look less like the traitor to the Republic that he is.

Boy, how I despise that POS.
