Ukraine liberated the city of Kherson after Russian troops fled, with soldiers treated to a hero's welcome by jubilant as they arrived in city centre this afternoon.
Flag-waving locals wept, chanted the name of Ukrainian armed forces, hugged and kissed troops as they arrived in the city's main square hours after the bulk of Moscow's forces withdrew across Dnipro River.
Ukraine's artillery had pounded the city and the nearby Dnipro River overnight and into the early hours in the hopes of destroying any last Russians trying to flee. Rumours swirled that thousands of troops might be trapped in the city, but as the day wore on those hopes seemed ill-founded.
Fears that Russia could be laying some kind of trap also failed to materialize.

Russia's defence ministry said: 'At 05:00 Moscow time today, the redeployment of Russian units to the (eastern) bank of the Dnipro River was completed. During the redeployment, not a single piece of military hardware or weaponry was left behind. All Russian service personnel were moved across, there were no losses.'
Despite the apparent success of the retreat, the loss of Kherson still represents a major defeat for Putin and his armed forces. It was the sole regional capital captured by his army since the invasion began, and sits in a region he declared to be part of Russia just a few weeks ago.
Losing Kherson means any Russian assault on Odesa is now all-but impossible. It also means that Ukraine can now strike parts of Crimea - the crown jewel of his last invasion, in 2014 - with long-range artillery. Kyiv has already said it plans to take the peninsula back.

Russia pulled back to the defensible border the want to keep. They secured the water supply canal the idiot Ukes cut off, they have a land bridge to Crimea, they control shipping access to the Dnieper, and Ukes cannot conduct a River crossing operation.
Solid lifesaving move and they evacuated everyone who didn’t want to live under Uke “freedom”.

Just an observation. They can barely conduct normal attacks. Crossing the Dnieper is equivalent to a full scale amphibious assualt.
Our own massive Army in WWII looked at crossing the Rhine as a giant operation.
The Ukes have no capability in that regard to do a forcible amphib assault. When they tried a small amphib raid on the Zap Nuclear plant, they were annihilated. Just a fact. The Russian are much bigger and experienced and they struggled with forced crossings of much smaller rivers.
Cheerlead all you want, but the Russians have pulled back to a permanent defensive border and one that is indeed... very defensible and beyond Uke capability.
I know.. i know... homeland, 10 feet tall, love of the Reich etc.. brave Zelinsky. But them are the facts.
The war is over, Ukraine won the thing! Now all that’s left is the peace treaty. I didn’t think it was possible but—they did it. Give them points—it wasn’t easy but they pulled it off. Still, they could well win the war and lose the peace. Pushing on may well be a bridge too far.

Using the word “Permanent”, like Putin’s use of the word “Forever” in his announcing his annexation of Kherson, is just hubris.
With well over 50% of the land that Russia occupied during this year’s invasion already liberated, and the main supply lines to Zaporizhzhia Oblast and Crimea already cut or under under Ukrainian fire control; “Permanent” and “Forever” are now just laughable.
The only people still afraid of the Russian Military, are Russian men between the ages of 16-65.
Six more months of attrition like this, and Russia’s remaining conventional Military power is going to be on par with that of Greece.
Putin did that.
