Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) fell short of the votes needed to secure the speaker’s gavel on the first ballot, with his chances of obtaining the long-coveted role remaining in doubt as conservatives continue to withhold their support for the California Republican.
Nineteen GOP lawmakers voted against him Tuesday afternoon as they push for the conference to rally around a different “consensus candidate.”
The chamber is slated to move on to a second ballot for the first time since 1923, with McCarthy allies hoping that he garners more support as both the “Never Kevin” and “Only Kevin” factions of the GOP vow to go as many ballots as it takes.
A total of 19 Republicans voted against McCarthy on the first ballot. Among the "no" votes were Rep. Andy Biggs, who challenged McCarthy for the leadership spot and voted for himself. Most of the "no" votes were in his favor. Six members voted for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), including Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL), and Rep.-elect Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL). Jordan is a member of the Freedom Caucus and the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee.
McCarthy, who won an internal leadership election in November with 36 Republicans voting against him, has struggled to sway conservative hard-liners who demanded substantial changes to the House and conference rules, including restoring the motion to vacate the chair, a mechanism used to oust a sitting speaker; a ban on leadership playing in primaries, commitments to rein in spending and restore regular order; and better committee assignments for right-wing lawmakers.
After the GOP fell short of its anticipated red wave, McCarthy faced a steeper climb in gaining the gavel, with the margins in the House allowing him just four defections on the floor unless his critics choose to vote present or not vote to bring down the threshold.

While the California Republican has made strides to meet with potential defectors and strike a compromise, his efforts were not enough to sway the support needed for the first round. But McCarthy, who previously dropped out of the speaker’s race to replace former Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) in 2015 amid conservative pushback, has asserted that he believes the party needs to rally around him to demonstrate that it is capable of governing with its new House majority.
Five conservatives — former House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Bob Good (R-VA), Ralph Norman (R-SC), and Matt Rosendale (R-MT) — said that they would not support McCarthy on the floor and would continue to vote as a bloc in the weeks leading up to the start of the new Congress. While talk of centrists working with Democrats to pick another candidate was floated in November, various GOP factions claimed that they would rally around McCarthy until the end on Thursday.
This story is breaking. Please check back for updates.
McCarthy needs to step aside. This has already been embarrassing enough.
I am cheering. I am not a rabid anti-McCarthy guy (pretty neutral about him) because he will at least respond to pressure from the base (unlike McConnell), but if he can’t do it perhaps we get Jordan. I would love that!"
Agree on all points.
If what rep Gaetz is saying is true, then McCarthy cannot be speaker if we really want to secure our border that has been overrun with foreign nationals breaking our laws (the effects of which won't largely be seen for a number of years). That being just one of the critial issues.
"We offered Kevin McCarthy terms last evening that he rejected," said Gaetz. "We’ve sought a vote in a first quarter of the 118th Congress on term limits. He refused. We wanted a budget from the Republican Study Committee that balances on the floor in the first quarter. He refused. We wanted the border plan that the Texas delegation put together on the floor. He refused."
The GOP couldn’t organize a lemonade stand.
I sent e-mails to my Florida Congressman and Donald J. Trump, warning them that the GOP was not providing leadership or guidance as they took control of the HOUSE!!! Neither of them listened or heeded my input!!! The end result was a 100% “Chinese Fire Drill” that went off the railroad tracks...big time!!! Kevin McCarthy was a total zero...not an ounce of leadership or direction!!! He and his buddy, Mitch McConnell belong thrown into the nearest garbage can!!! All I got to say is you GOP folks better get your act together or you will go nowhere fast!!!
More like last gasp.
You don’t have the numbers to elect a “far-right” Republican, whatever the Hell “far-right” means.
Lee Zeldin is a solid conservative who if it wasn’t for him and his strong NY showing, the House would still be in Dems hands.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
You’re right, and right again!
From 2010.
Remember those other two?
Yeah, McCarthy is a RINO Deep State weasel, to judge by the company he keeps.
I absolutely agree.
I don’t have any problem with it; in fact I hope it goes on more. It brings excitement to politics.
I’m tired of the dull predictability, where we already know who a presidential nominee will be, before the convention—and like in this case, the Speaker immediately as a new Congress is seated.
The uncertainty brings excitement—and I doubt it “holds up” “important” business of Congress.
If PDJT wants to prove he can be a statesman, now is the time to do it.
Dream on!
By doing what?
If McCarthy becomes speaker and makes a deal with Dems and RINOs to push through “comprehensive immigration reform” it’s all over, and everything we have been fighting against triumphs. I think we need to press McCarthy harder.
......McCarthy has already signed on to the new Republican agenda, Investigations, Border Plan etc ... He also voted against the Omnibus Budget Deal.
.... Also ..... What most people don't realize is that McCarthy also signed a "No Confidence" clause that if he in any way does not meet GOP Expectations he will step down and be replaced. Heck .... The GOP Could get rid of him right after the House is Sworn in if they wanted. Right now we have .... ZERO House Members .... And won't until we have a Speaker Because the Speaker is the one that Swears them in! ....
.
Ha! You actually believe a swamp drenched, career politician…and, his “no confidence” clause??
Thank you for the good laugh, this evening.
“ He’s got the votes, it was just symbolic that he wouldn’t win on the first ballot. “
or the third
or _ _ _ _
It turns out that Votes are actually being bought and sold so the delay seems to be due to a cash shortage: seems the democrats have all the cash and the republicans just get the scraps that fall from the Ukraine table
This whole thing is reality TV. He’ll probably make it by a vote and then all those who opposed him will have street cred.
They’re laughing their @**** off. It’s a win-win for them.
I hope the Neutered Republican MAJORITY, can figure out a good person to put in the Speaker’s chair. I sure don’t want any Democrat in that chair.
Lee Zelden has a real chance to broker the peace.
