McCarthy loses sixth vote for speaker as House remains deadlocked

WASHINGTON — For a second consecutive day, a band of 20 ultraconservative rebels blocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy from winning the speaker’s gavel, just hours after former President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to back him and "close the deal."

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, six votes were held on the House floor to choose a speaker; each time, the rebels stuck together and voted for someone else, denying McCarthy the 218 votes he needed to win.

With both McCarthy allies and foes deeply dug in, it ensures that chaos will reign in the House for the foreseeable future under the new GOP majority.

During the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots on Wednesday, McCarthy — a California Republican who has served in leadership for the past 14 years — received support from more than 90% of the 222 GOP members. Earlier in the day, he was nominated by Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus who warned his fellow conservatives that their opposition will end up hurting their cause.

"We're on the precipice of such a destructive argument today. I plead with all— all of my Republican colleagues, let cooler, more rational heads prevail. Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House," Davidson said.

But the McCarthy foes showed no signs of backing down. In the three votes Wednesday, they rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds, a Black Florida conservative who won his second term in November.

Firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., nominated her fellow Freedom Caucus colleague, Donalds, saying she was not swayed by Trump — "my favorite president" — calling her to tell her to "knock this off."

"The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'sir, you do not have the votes and it’s time to withdraw,'" Boebert said of Trump to scattered boos.

Moving out of the speakers office would be embarrassingly painful.

Rather smug getting all moved in before he has won.

I guess he didn’t know you shouldn’t count your eggs.

It will go on and on. After 20 votes and he still can’t win. This is quite entertaining.

All the SOB had to do was agree with the rule changes concerning the ways and means committee.

Right now they push bills written by the lobbyists through the ways and means and onto the floor without any consideration.

He will not budge on that and does not care if the American people keep getting screwed as long as they keep that power.

This is how skunk city works these days.

“One thing about this whole thing surprises me.......Why Trump’s endorsement of McCarthy did not have more of an effect (which was none) than it did.

Would have expected it would have at least brought a handful of reps over to McCarthy. Go figure.”

I think the results of the midterms exposed Trump and Republicans are no longer in fear of him. They can openly defy it be critical of him without fear of repercussions.

These brave patriots have chosen to stand against the powerful Military Industrial Complex and the World Economic Forum. This is not to be taken lightly. If they lose, their life and career will be over from now on...

They are sacrificing themselves for us the people. This is Founding Father’s type dedication right here and they deserve our full support and appreciation.

So true, exposing the club for what it is “ all about the benjamins, and themselves” not “ we the people”

And some good advice from the preacher for McCarthy as he seeks loyal friends in DC:

Mitch was rolled into the senate like a thief in the night. The old Senate voted for him before the new senate even showed up. We have seen how that worked out for us as deep state Traitor Mitch is most responsible for the passage of some really nasty stuff. We also found out that the vast majority of Republican Senators are not at all what they are supposed to be. Infiltrators.

These members in congress who are holding out are fighting to really clean up the crap. Because they know how the game is played. McCarthy equals Mitch. Those two are the fail safe power controllers who can override and control all efforts. Sadly I don’t think we will get rid of McCarthy, No more than we got rid of Mitch. but it is so good to see someone stand up to the corruption.
