I was checking coastal water depths off the coast of SC, and just grabbing a couple of numbers- I saw 600’ to 1,600’ feet, out about 10-12 miles. Even these depths would be shallow enough for an easy pick.
It was found in 45 feet of water just off the beach area it was all planed well.

Couldn’t the Chicoms just get their intel from brochures in racks at Dem congrescritters offices and the DNC like they always do?

It was a dry run for the EMP attack.
Now they know it’s all clear.
It’s actually pretty difficult to down a large multi-compartment balloon in a short time frame with gunfire. The Canadians shot up a weather balloon with 1000 rounds of 20mm cannon fire a few years ago, and it took the darn thing 3 days to come down.
A good comparison would be trying to shoot up a 20 cubic foot soft foam ball with a BB gun.
Another comparison is our “tin can” ships in WW2 that Japanese armor piercing rounds went right through.
We obviously wanted this to come down fairly quickly / in shallow water close to shore for recovery purposes. So, we shredded part of it.
NORAD had nothing to do with the downing of the balloon all they do is track it.
Actually, that was my point... a way to bring it down slowly so that maximum recovery would be possible.
I was pointing out the absence of reporting/notification by NORAD.
