DeSantis Says ‘War Criminal’ Putin Should Be ‘Held Accountable’ Days After Saying Ukraine Not a ‘Vital’ U.S. Interest

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis toughened his stance on Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling Putin a “war criminal” who should be “held accountable” for the invasion of Ukraine, just days after he claimed the Ukraine war is not a “vital national interest.”

DeSantis angered Republican hawks, Never Trumpers, and neocons less than two weeks ago when he characterized the Ukraine-Russia conflict as a “territorial dispute” that is not a “vital” U.S. interests.

DeSantis told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson:

While the U.S. has many vital national interests — securing our border, addressing the crisis of readiness within our military, achieving energy security and independence, checking the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party — becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them.

After DeSantis’s initial comments, Never Trumper Adam Kinzinger (IL) dismissed DeSantis as being “in with the crazies,” and former GOP congresswoman Liz Cheney scolded DeSantis for seemingly forgetting “the lessons of Ronald Reagan.”

However, during an interview with Piers Morgan, DeSantis took a tougher position on the Ukraine conflict. In that interview, set to air on Fox Nation on Thursday, DeSantis branded Putin as a “war criminal” and demanded he be “held accountable” for invading Ukraine.

DeSantis also said his critics “mischaracterized” his use of the phrase “territorial dispute.”

“Well, I think it’s been mischaracterized,” DeSantis said when asked if he regretted using that language. “Obviously, Russia invaded (last year) — that was wrong. They invaded Crimea and took that in 2014 — That was wrong.”

DeSantis clarified that his remarks were about the fighting in Ukraine’s eastern border region.

DeSantis told Morgan:

DeSantis is veering all over the map on issues.

He is beginning to resemble Romney 2012 who was on either side of many issues.

DeSantis is giving the media ammunition — to use against him — should he even get close to the nomination.

The same wankers who now rule us by means of that flagrantly stolen election in 2020, want to rule the entire world the same way; the only things standing between them and that lofty goal are Vladimir Putin and the Russian military.

And they can put Reginald DeSantis in the cage next to him...

Whatever doubt I had about DeSantis being on MAGA side of GOP divide, vanished with his pretzel-like flip-flop on Ukraine and weaponization of justice.

It is clear, besides wooing MAGA base, he is trying to woo never-Trumper, RINO and Neo-Con wings of GOP base. He probably thinks he can unite all GOP factions, who do not see eye, under his ambitious political platform - like a new uni-party that is not a b-team of Democrat party. I think he will fail spectacularly. There is no way MAGA vs RINOs and Neo-Cons can co-exist on the same political platform.

[It’s entertainment for cowardly bullies around the world, as they yearn for their childhood. The Ukrainians are willing to fight for their freedom, so give them what they need.]

I don’t fond the two statements incompatible. Putin is a war criminal and Zelenskyy is a total jerk we need to get our money back from.

The GOPe types like George and Jeb Bush, Paul Ryan, Karl Rove, etc. as well as the rich war profiteer RINO big money “men” took Ron to the woodshed.

I agree with both of these opinions. Putin is a war criminal, Ukraine is not “vital” but its outcome is of interest to us.

The two statements are not incompatible.

I don’t remember the same complaint being levelled at Reagan when he agreed that the Argentine regime was out of line, but thought its dispute with the UK over the Falklands was not something that the USA should be involved in.

From a Brit perspective that was a slap in the face, because obviously the River Plate indigenous populations had no idea the islands even existed until after decades after three European empires had already landed there and built settlements. Buenos Aires contracted an American privateer to plant a flag and set up another settlement.

Argentina’s only only claim to the islands was, “because Spain had settled there” and “because a Yankee merc did us a solid”.

On the second point the USA could’ve said something, picked a side. Reagan, wisely, chose not to get America involved.

But he didn’t think for one minute that the regime in Buenos Aires was the good guy.

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/29/world/europe/falklands-war-caused-rare-friction-for-thatcher-and-reagan.html

Spot all the parallels between that conflict and this one, in terms of split messaging. Being a strong ally with Britain at the time didn’t mean the USA had to endorse the British defence of its settlements, but it also didn’t mean America agreed Argentina had a compelling moral or legal defence for invading in the first place.

Same applies now. Putin has demonstrably broken multiple binding treaties. China values its relationship with Russia but won’t be anything more than a neutral peace broker. China’s peace plan tells Russia as directly as they can that the Belovezha Accords and UN Charter are incompatible with its invasion for annexation. But China isn’t flying to Kyiv either.

Annnnnnnnd DeSantis pivots to cater to the RINO Establishment and their forever wars.

No wonder he’s falling like a rock in the polls.
