In one section of the speech, Douglass noted, “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.... hypocrisy—a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.” That sounds bitter to me.Bear in mind the preface of the speech: “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?" Speaking the truth is not being bitter!

Slavery was a major issue during the founding of the country but was allowed to continue to pull the country together. If the founding fathers had insisted, there was a really good chance the country was never founded.
