Harrisburg Tops U.S. News 2024 Best Places To Retire Ranking

U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in rankings and consumer advice, today unveiled the 2024 Best Places To Retire in the United States rankings.

This year’s list evaluated the country’s 150 most populous metropolitan areas based on how well they meet Americans' expectations for retirement, with measures including affordability, health care, desirability, retiree taxes, job market and overall happiness.

The results are three new places in the top five. Pennsylvania dominated the top five in this year’s list and secured seven placements in the overall top 10. Harrisburg rose one spot to take the No. 1 rank due to its scores on health care for seniors, retiree tax rates and overall happiness of its residents. Reading moved up six positions to the No. 2 spot, while Lancaster fell to No. 3 (it was formally ranked first). Scranton saw the sole double-digit jump into the top five, rising 13 positions to No. 4, and Allentown climbed four positions to No. 5

Having worked in Harrisburg (1) and Lancaster (3), and resided in both Reading(2) and Allentown(5), I can say that this list is an absolute joke.

I live in Arkansas and I don’t see this. People are moving here from those places this article say are great for retirement.

I did an internship in Allentown where I worked on a project to revitalize the central business district. The revitalization effort took the form of putting up ugly plastic canopies over the sidewalks and making an insipid radio jingle.

My boss asked what I thought of the project. I told her that canopies and advertisements don’t do anything address the two primary problems with the central business district which were crime and parking.

I can’t see Harrisburg’s appeal. I was there five weeks ago, and noted the higher cost of food and gas everywhere.

I live outside of Harrisburg. I’m getting out of dodge if it ever becomes affordable to buy a home again. I don’t get along with winters very well anymore and quite honestly the economy here is built on government. The number one employer is state government. The number two employer is the federal government. That makes a tremendous number of people that I have little in common.
