Yale Public Health Dean Megan Ranney Suggests Greening Vacant Lots Could Curb Chicago Shootings

Yale School of Public Health dean Dr. Megan Ranney (pictured) gave congressional testimony Tuesday in which she responded to questions about Chicago gun violence by pointing to studies suggesting that repairing urban buildings could reduce shootings.

Ranney made the remark during an exchange with Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA), who had asked her about the raging gun violence in Chicago.

Kennedy said, “Why do you think Chicago has become America’s largest outdoor shooting range?”

Ranney responded by saying, “Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri actually have higher firearm death rates.”

Gardening simple-mindedness has been around politics for a LONG time. Sometimes such plain-spokenness about gardens even gets you elected President of the US, not just the Yale Public Health Dean.

Chance the Gardener: Yes. In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter. And then we get spring and summer again.

Well, Henry Cisneros tried doing more basketball hoops. I wonder if that worked. Better to SHOOT hoops than shoot people was the idea.

Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, makes people want to shoot each other more than a lack of green space! Duh!

The stupid in this one is beyond strong. Apparently Megan Ranney doesn't know that the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago where shootings are frequent actually have lots of trees and lots of grass covered lots.

Her theory that greenery reduces crime is not supported by the evidence in Chicago.

One of the neighborhoods in Chicago with the highest rates of murder is Englewood. A typical residential street in Englewood has single family houses surrounded by grass lawns with trees lining the sidewalks.

A typical street in Englewood with grass, trees, and yards.

The scene of a shooting in October where 4 people died. Seems like plenty of grass, trees, and greenery.

Megan Raney seems like an uninformed, elitist liberal who can't imagine that black people live in single family homes in a neighborhood with grass yards and trees and the young people still go out and shoot each other. And she thinks people should listen to her.

And just for accuracy, only one person died in the shooting in October in the 6100-block of South Justine Street. The other’s were wounded.

I had diarrhea last week and there was a 4.2 drop in Chicago gun violence. SO, everyone MUST enjoy Taco Tuesday next week, you know for the good of all Chicago.

OK I did NOT read the article but I think it is a great idea to raze the abandoned (beyond repair) buildings and populate the lot with native hardwoods. The reasons in the article are stupid but the city would benefit from it in other ways.

Unfortunately I suspect the lots would be overtaken by bums and vermin

How about this,Megan...maybe Chitcago should adopt the Rudy Guiliani method of cleaning up a large city.

Start arresting shoplifters, those who jump subway turnstyles, those who play music too loud, those caught with small amounts of grass, those who run stop signs, etc. Enforce the "little" laws. Doing that eventually turned NYC from a murderer's haven to the safest big city in the country.

Of course Mayor Wilhelm (DiBlasio)...and his lesbian wife...changed all that and now we see NYC as a cesspool again.
