Trump Routs the Republican Establishment Once Again
New Republic ^ | 1/23/24 | Alex Shephard

Eight years ago, when Donald Trump romped to victory in New Hampshire’s Republican presidential primary, his critics within the party could be forgiven for not knowing what to do about him. Though Trump had been a mainstay of right-wing cable news for years, he was a political neophyte. But this much was clear: He was unapologetically not a traditional conservative—indeed, he had long been a Democrat—and he took particular glee in spitting in the face of the GOP establishment. So his rivals for the 2016 nomination largely made the same bet: Stay out of his line of fire and hope that voters come to their senses. We all know how well that turned out.

Eight years later, Trump has again romped to victory in the Granite State. The result not only suggests that he’s on a glide path to the Republican nomination, but also marks the biggest and most consequential failure yet for his opponents in the party. Republican power brokers and Trump’s aspiring successors have for years agonized over and studied him, hoping to somehow break his hold on the party. It is clear today that their efforts to thwart him have failed miserably—because they still, incredibly, don’t understand him.

For a time last year, a different outcome was at least imaginable, as three seemingly viable alternatives emerged in the Republican field: Ron DeSantis, a popular and pugilistic Florida governor who emulated Trump at every opportunity; Tim Scott, a sunny and young conservative senator who emphasized his faith; and Nikki Haley, who both served as Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations and who represented the sharpest break from him, in terms of policy. As of Wednesday, only Haley is still standing, and she might not be for much longer.

Boy yahoo is really whining hard over Trump winning. You know what they say. Only a stuck pig squeals. They’re squealing mighty loudly.

...“Trumpism” itself remains as intellectually vacuous as ever. There is not, and never has been, a Trump doctrine.

Totally disagree. His doctrine is what he says he wants to do. From closing the boarder to crippling the Deep State, you're trying to make "Trumpism" complicated. Go to his rallies and actually listen to what he says. To say he is "intellectually vacuous" and that there is no "Trumpism" doctrine it simply telling me you don't listen.

Voters hear and like what he is saying and believe that he will try to the best of his abilities to make those changes. Voters also know that most other politicians work for themselves, not the American citizen. You may not like what or how Trump says things, but you know what your getting with Trump. There's only one other politician I trust (Jim Jordan)...with maybe one or two other exceptions, I don't trust the rest of the politicians.

You would think the independent voters would take notice. It’s not just the democrats he’s fighting.

Authenticity is Trump.

None of his opponents can fake that successfully

If only the power brokers and career politicians cold get better voters, so they would not have to keep doing Wily Coyote things to Donald Trump. Where could the pubs find conservatives who want to move to this country?

Haley and Scott tried to present themselves as breaks from the former president’s dark, violent, fascistic approach to politics

How do they write things like this with a straight face? The only things that are dark, violent, and fascistic are the words and deeds of Trump's adversaries, not least among them, the Xiden administration itself.

It appears that Haley got about 10% of her 33% votes from crossover Democrats: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/01/20/democrats-nikki-haley-primary-votes-00136418

So, without the crossover votes, the vote would have been 65% to 33%. In terms of Haley, when you lie down with pigs, you get up with mud on yourself. She is selling out to the highest bidder. No doubt McConnell’s Chamber of Commerce is staying in with Haley.

Final tab was 55% Trump, 43% Haley. If you took away the crossover votes, she would have gotten 33%, yet she is stumping like she won the lottery. Maybe her message would be one of unity for the country: 1/2 Republican, 1/2 rabid Democrat.

Even Ronna McDaniel is saying Nikki needs to drop out now.

She needs to issue a formal statement to this effect.

She got Democrats to vote for her in the Republican primary of a Democrat state. She spend double the amount that Trump spent and spent months of time crisscrossing the state. She got a lot of free media, Trump spent much of his time in court. Virtually every mainstream media outlet spent a few weeks calling Trump Hitler and the “very popular” Govenor of the state spent a month with her campaigning. I imagine she had his GOTV operation in full effect. With all of those advantages she lost by 12%. She’s welcome to stay in but she won’t earn enough delegates to be the nominee. Maybe it will help Trump because he has the Republican electorate locked in, he couldbuse this as an opportunity to tune his message to go after thr independents Birdbrain is going to need to appeal to in order to not lose every state by 30. It would be nice if she joined the team but, lemons, lemonade and all that.

“Final tab was 55% Trump, 43% Haley“

It’s funny how they can count the votes all in one day when they WANT to, isn’t it??
