Capital One Financial is set to acquire Discover Financial Services , according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The deal could be announced Tuesday, the outlet said, citing sources.
The merger of the two companies, who are among the largest credit card issuers in the U.S., would expand Capital Oneโs credit-card offerings. The news comes on the back of a Bloomberg News report on Monday that Capital One was considering an acquisition.
Shares of Discover are down 1.7% lower for the year, putting the company at a $27.63 billion market cap. Capital One has a market cap of $52.2 billion and shares of the company are up 4.6% in 2024.
Oh no. First Capital One bought out Walmart credit cards, now Discover. I hate Capital One and have tried to stay away from them, only for them to buy out the credit card companies I banked with. Gawd if I ever pay these blasted things off and cut them up, they will be gone.
great comment, thanks

Trust me when I tell you they're making money on you. As much as they'd like? No, they're still making money though. I used to work at a large nationwide retail bank. If they weren't making money from you, they'd cancel your card.
You’re one more card than me... ha! Paid off the month I use it.
When you charge upwards of 20% to 30% you are rolling in cash.
2% is so 20th century, mast cards are getting > 4% these days. It’s why almost all small businesses and restaurants are charging extra for non-cash payments these days. If it has come t your local area, look out it will soon...
it is because of the chancellery courts in Delaware. One of the main reasons so many companies incorporate there. Biden be damned, it is how The First State has remained relevant for centuries.
Very wise activity. I alternate between Sharpie markers and a shredder. It's a mood thing.
My 2% figure was what I believe the card co’s get after the 3rd party processor gets their cut (Visa, MC, Discover, etc. don’t get the full 4% a store pays the IT card service processor).
Have been saving up for one of those micro shredder thingies (into tiny little rectangles, and supposedly can do CDs and DVDs too).
Most shredders break when I look at them. Actually, I get impatient and tend to jam too much paper, window envelopes, staples and you name it. My latest shredder isn’t bad. It will shred credit cards too.
This should be a huge anti-trust issue.
Exactly.. that is why I am (trying to) saving up for a non-Chinese made (hopefully American or Japanese) shredder that is supposed to shred up to 12 sheets at once (or something like that).
I am willing to go up around $100, but need to make sure it is real first.
Discover Card’s website STILL doesn’t have two factor authentication. They just refuse to do it. You can’t activate it. Not an option.
Not a good sign.
