NYC’s ‘worst landlord’ wanted for arrest over 700 open violations including mold, roaches and lead paint

Peeling lead paint. Roach infestations. Blinking electricity. Mold.

These are just some of the dangerous conditions that Daniel Ohebshalomthe Big Apple’s “worst landlord,” has allegedly ignored in two of his Washington Heights apartment buildings, city housing officials said Monday.

The nearly 700 open violations between the buildings at 705 and 709 170th Street earned Ohebshalom an open arrest warrant, a two-month vacation at Rikers Island and fines of more than $3 million, the officials said.

“The worst landlord in New York City is Daniel Ohebshalom,” Commissioner Adolfo Carrión Jr. of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development said at a press conference in front of City Hall.

“People are dealing with mold, leaks, pests — rats and roaches — peeling paint, lead paint. Their children are exposed, seniors are exposed. It’s time to stop this nonsense,” Carrión added.

The violations cited in Ohebshalom’s warrant are “extensive and include serious, immediately hazardous conditions that threaten not only the residents’ quality of life but their health and safety,” HPD said in a press release.

The warrant lets the NYC Sheriff’s Department cooperate with California enforcement teams that operate in the Golden State, where Ohebshalom lives.

“We’re drop-dead serious about this work. If you abuse New Yorkers in the places where they live, and you don’t take care of their homes, as a property owner, we’re coming after you,” Carrión vowed. ***

While a judge first held Ohebshalom — who defied court orders for more than a year — in civil contempt back in January 2023, he hails from a well-known family of slumlords who have invited legal trouble with their savage practices.

I wonder if people realize that this is (like all economic issues) a matter of trade-offs?

We have made it illegal to be a “slum lord”.
We have made it illegal to live in a “substandard apartment”.

We pat ourselves on the back because we are “protecting the poor and vulnerable”.

Then we complain that there is a tremendous housing shortage, and the housing that is there, costs $5000 a month.

These things are connected, you know.

Doesn’t the New York City Housing Authority have a problem with mold, roaches, rats, etc. When I read the headline I thought it was about the NYCHA.

Pests are often the fault of tenants. You cannot get rid of roaches and mice if you do not first get rid of their food source.

Hmmm roaches? Mold? Sounds like a TENANT caused issue to me. Lead paint IMHO is overblown. We were raised with lead paint and somehow we did ok. Must be the lack of 24/7 screens, junk food diet and crack smoke that pulled us through.

I suspect he’s also dealing with fixed rents. These rents were “fixed” decades ago. The cost of renovating these buildings can’t be recovered.

No excuse for non-maintenance of properties, BUT...

It’s not the landlord who dumps trash in the halls or the alleys, graffitis surfaces, fails to clean up kitchens (attracting roaches and mice), brings in bedbugs, etc.

Here’s the problem: the tenants live like, well put it this way, the property is destroyed when the tenants are done living in it. What is a landlord to do?

I cannot say for how much of this the landlord is at fault or not. But I can say that in NY the landlord is always at fault according to the law. The Tenants are never responsible for anything. They could take a hammer and break a window and then call the health department and the landlord would be legally threatened or charged.

They haven’t made lead paint for decades.

We rented a 4 bedroom house that 30 Mexicans had been living in. Got a discount for cleaning it up even though by law, the landlord should have done it before renting it.

It had some mold and German Cockroaches galore. So many that the fridge gaskets were covered with squished pieces of them. I was surprised at how easy it was to get rid of the roaches. Always heard German Cockroaches were the hardest to get rid of. Turns out you just clean really well and they’ll either starve to death or leave.

The mold was in the bathrooms. Too many people, possibly they kept the door closed at all times. We cleaned it and made sure to let the bathroom dry out after a shower. Done deal.

Yes they are connected. We need to put a law that a landlord cannot make more than 20% profit. It worked so well with the Health Insurance companies under Obamacare we should expand it to other industries.

Nothing like super-sized fines to fund government operations.
If these building have lead paint, then they are very old. NY City limits the rents while requiring expensive remediation. As for the roaches, they are in almost all NY City apartment buildings.
