Ukraine faces ammunition crisis as air defence missiles dwindle
The Telegraph ^ | 16 March 2024 | James Kilner

Ukraine is running so low on ammunition that it will run out of air defence missiles to defend its cities by the end of the month, according to reports.

Supplies of missiles defending cities such as Odesa – where 20 people were killed on Friday – are dwindling fast, according to Ukrainian sources quoted by The Washington Post.

That means that instead of trying to shoot down four out of five Russian missiles as it does now, Ukraine will soon have to ration its air defence systems to shooting down just one in five.

This will have a “significant effect on Ukraine’s urban centres”, The Washington Post quoted two Ukrainian officials as telling US officials at a security conference this year.

Politicians in the US are locked in a fierce debate on whether to maintain military aid to Ukraine, which currently stands at around £31.3 billion.

This week Viktor Orban, Hungary’s Prime Minister, said that Donald Trump, the presumed Republican candidate at this year’s US presidential election had told him that he would not give any more cash to Ukraine.

We’ve never been weaker. Even our aircraft carriers are floating coffins nowadays with our adversaries advanced missile technology. I know you don’t see it, but it is a fact.

As far as the things I have described in my posts, things were worse 2 years ago.

You don’t like these new factories among America and its allies, or the new military budgets, the new unity and focus on war-fighting, the new bases, the huge new gains in our NATO membership with Finland and Sweden, Europe’s breaking away from Russian energy, Japan’s biggest military buildup since WWII and the Philippines reopening to us, and our new American bases and Australia buying nuke subs from us, there is a huge list of this kind of stuff resulting from this devastating quagmire Russia got itself into.

We are better positioned against China/Russia than we were 2 years ago and all the negatives are out in the open and being argued and some fixed, whereas 2 years ago they were all hidden and NATO, America, and the Pacific were stagnant and complacent.

We were weaker 2 years ago and when I say “we” I mean us, NATO, Japan, Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, everyone.

That’s not addressing the real problem, which these high tech weapons simply cost too much and are unreliable, to boot, and yet the military is addicted to them

Patriot systems are too complex, too few in number, and far too expensive for Ukraine.

There are only 1,000 built, of which 2 are in UKR.

PUTIN NOT INTERESTED IN PEACE

Excerpts from the Ukrainian 10-point peace formula President Zelensky outlined:
2022/12/28

1. RADIATION AND NUCLEAR SAFETY
Russia must immediately withdraw all its militants from the territory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The station must be immediately transferred to the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency and Ukrainian personnel. The normal connection of the station to the power grid must be restored immediately so that nothing threatens the stability of the reactors.
The same goes for the crazy threats of nuclear weapons that Russian officials resort to. There are and cannot be any excuses for nuclear blackmail.

2. FOOD SECURITY
the initiative, Grain From Ukraine has already begun. Ukraine can export 45 million tonnes of food this year. And let a significant part of it be directed to those who suffer the most.
Each country can join with a specific contribution and become a co-creator of the victory over hunger and the food crisis.

3. ENERGY SECURITY
About 40% of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was destroyed by strikes of Russian missiles and Iranian drones used by the occupiers.
A related goal of this terror is to prevent the export of our electricity to neighboring countries, which could significantly help them stabilize the energy situation and reduce prices for consumers.
I thank all our partners who have already helped Ukraine with the supply of air defense and missile defense systems. This allows us to shoot down some of the Russian missiles and Iranian drones.
If Russia is trying to deprive Ukraine, Europe and all energy consumers in the world of predictability and price stability, the answer is price restrictions on Russian energy resources & forced limitation of export prices for Russia.

4. PRISONERS and DEPORTEES
Thousands of UKRAINIANS – military and civilians – are in the Russian captivity being subjected to torture.
In addition, 11,000 children know by name were forcibly deported to Russia. They are separated from their parents in full knowledge that they have families.
Additionally, hundreds of thousands of deported adults and political prisoners are held in Russia and in the temporarily occupied territory as well as in Crimea.
We must release all these people.

5. UNITED NATIONS CHARTER AND UKRAINE’S TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY
The validity of international law must be restored without any compromises with the aggressor. The UN Charter cannot be applied partially, selectively or at will.
Russia must reaffirm the territorial integrity of Ukraine within the framework of the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the applicable international legally binding documents. It is not up to negotiations.

6. RUSSIAN TROOPS AND HOSTILITIES
Russia must withdraw all troops and armed formations from the territory of Ukraine. Control over all sections of Ukraine’s border with Russia must be restored. This will result in a real and complete cessation of hostilities.

7. JUSTICE
The world should endorse the Special Tribunal regarding the crime of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and create of an international mechanism to compensate for all damages caused by this war. Compensation at the expense of Russian assets because as the aggressor must be responsible to do everything to restore the justice it violated.
A resolution of the UN General Assembly regarding an international compensation mechanism for damages caused by the Russian war has been proposed and endorsed.

8. IMMEDIATE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT
Millions of hectares of forest were burned by shelling. Almost 200,000ha of Ukraine land is contaminated with unexploded mines and shells.
I thank all the countries that are already helping us with de-mining. However, there is an urgent need for increased number of equipment and experts for these operations.
Funds and technologies are also needed for the restoration of water treatment facilities.

9. PREVENTION OF ESCALATION
Ukraine is not a member of any alliances. Russia was able to start this war precisely because Ukraine remained in the grey zone – between the Euro-Atlantic world and the Russian imperialism.
An international conference should be held to finalize the key elements of the post-war security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine. The main outcome of the conference should be the signing of the Kyiv Security Compact.

10. CONFIRMATION OF THE END OF THE WAR
A document confirming the end of the war should be signed by the parties when all the anti-war measures are implemented and security and justice begin to be restored.
States ready to take the lead in this or that decision can become parties to the arrangement.

How is the fact that Ukraine’s low on ammo a US problem?

Because every nation in the world knows that they have to acquire nuclear weapons now. We told Ukraine that we’ll protect them if they got rid of their nuclear weapons in 1994.

What advanced missile tech? Russia and China have a couple hypersonics? So what?
