Study: Tires on Electric Cars Wear More Quickly, Have Less Durability

Tires on electric vehicles (EVs) have less durability and wear more quickly than tires on traditional gas-powered cars, a 2024 study shows. The revelation poses another problem for President Joe Biden’s quest to force Americans into EVs.

The J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study found that EV owners reported more tire wear compared to gas-powered cars, Automotive News reports:

Findings from the study highlight EV owners having less satisfaction with the durability of their tires, expecting them to wear similar to gasoline-powered vehicle tires. However, EV tires naturally wear quicker because of greater vehicle weight and higher torque. [Emphasis added]

This gap in satisfaction creates an opportunity for tire manufacturers and automakers to ensure EV owners are properly educated, Ashley Edgar, senior director of benchmarking and alternative mobility at J.D. Power, said in a statement. [Emphasis added]

The study comes as a survey from Consumer Reports found that EVs have almost 80 percent more problems than gas-powered cars.

Well, DUH!

The gas tank on an ICE car only weighs maybe 20 lbs when it’s empty and 120 (+/-) when it’s full. A Tesla battery still weighs half a ton either way.

And you think the electric powerplant weighs appreciably less, but it doesn’t, because the transmission has to be massive on account of the torque electric motors make.

At least 6 months ago articles said the heavy weight of the EVs was similar to larger trucks and would wear out the tires as well as damage the roads. This includes the cornering wear of friction from EVs making turns all day on the roads.
Good some new reports are coming out.

Good catch. Also most pharmaceuticals rely on petroleum products for production.

US Energy Information Administration quote:
Petroleum products include transportation fuels, fuel oils for heating and electricity generation, asphalt and road oil, and feedstocks for making the chemicals, plastics, and synthetic materials that are in nearly everything we use.

While I wouldn’t totally disagree, I haven’t experienced any problem with
It, rain and wet streets.
