My Country Knows What Happens When You Do a Deal With Russia {Moldova / Transdniester}
New York Times ^ | 23rd April 2024 | Paula Erizanu

More and more people, including Pope Francis, are asking Ukraine to drop its defense and sit at the negotiation table with Russia. Citing the stalemate on the battlefield and Russia’s superior resources, they urge Ukraine’s leadership to consider a deal. What exactly that would involve is largely left unsaid. But it would clearly involve freezing the conflict, resigning Ukraine’s occupied territory to Russia in exchange for an end to the fighting.

My country, Moldova, knows all about that kind of bargain. A small western neighbor of Ukraine, Moldova experienced Russia’s first post-Soviet war of aggression, which ended with a cease-fire agreement in 1992. Thirty-two years later, 1,500 Russian troops are still stationed on internationally recognized Moldovan territory, despite the Kremlin’s formal agreement to withdraw them in 1994 and then once again in 1999. The case shows that Russia simply cannot be trusted.

But there’s a bigger problem for Ukraine than Russian untrustworthiness. It’s that freezing a conflict, without a full peace deal, simply does not work. For three decades, it has fractured Moldova, hindered national development and given Russia continued opportunities to meddle with Moldovan life. A frozen conflict, we should remember, is still a conflict. Anyone calling for Ukraine to settle for one should heed Moldova’s cautionary tale.

...the starkest division is in education. Above Transnistrian schools, the Russian and Transnistrian — but not Moldovan — flags are mounted. There, as well as in the press, Romanian is written in Cyrillic rather than Latin script, just as it was in the Soviet Union. In history classes, pupils learn that ethnic Romanians on the right bank of the Dniester are fascists who want to kill them.

Moldovans fear escalation not because we haven’t sat down at negotiation tables with Russians but because we have, and the result was deeply damaging. Ukraine must not make the same mistake.

Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine. There's no end to Russia's appetite. And that's just for starters. No way would Putin be satisfied with just recreating the Soviet Union. He wants the Russian Empire back, which included most of Poland and all of Finland. Getting Poland would bring Russia to Germany's border. Do the German doves realize what that would mean?

Moldovan romanians are the majority in 90% of Transnistria. Russians only live in the cities and even there they only have a plurality and no majority.

If a Russian neighbor shows weakness and cedes some territory, Russia comes back later for more - as seen in 2014 Ukrine.

Based on your reply, I will guess that you support Biden’s approach to the war in Ukraine.

A couple of questions:

- If Ukraine is in danger of being lost due to Russian military advances, do you believe the US should should do any of the following:

a) declare war on Russia?

b) deploy combat arms personnel in Ukraine and directly engage Russian military units?

c) institute the military draft to support a US combat arms and support presence in Ukraine?

” He wants the Russian Empire back, which included most of Poland and all of Finland. Getting Poland would bring Russia to Germany’s border. “

Well, since Stalin moved the border of Germany considerably West, a Russian Empire stopping at Pyzdry would stilll be a hundred miles short of the German border.

Isn’t it interesting that we are to be so horrified at Russia being so close, while Russia is supposed to be blase about having NATO right on the Sumy border. Not 100 miles away from it.

Based on your reply, I will guess that you support Biden’s approach to the war in Ukraine. A couple of questions: a) blah-blah; b) blah-blah; c) blah-blah.

First make unfounded assumptions about the other party's entire politico-military position (cleverly insinuating that he is pro-Biden), and then go on to pose oh-so-innocent questions (it's quite possible that RockyTx in fact favors "d," "e," "f," or some combination thereof).

Par for the course!

It’s not unreasonable to believe that based on his response, that he supports Biden’s strategy regarding Ukraine.

That doesn’t mean he supports Biden (is “pro-Biden”), or that he supports Biden’s other policies.

I then asked three questions based on a hypothetical.

Practice some discernment, as your response was ignorant.

Strength is the way to deter bad actors of any stripe. The current leadership in the West are incapable of true strength. The western leaders are also bad actors.

We have weak women named Biden, Sunak, Macron, and Trudeau (and their ilk) posing as western leaders. Why would ANYONE in the east (Putin, Xi, Khameni) be afraid to cross these feminized weaklings?

Bibi and Orban are men. Milei, too, though he is new to the stage and is being tested. Trump certainly.

Let’s quit acting like Putin is the source of all evil. The evil comes from our own weakness within.

As a Baltic foreign minister once put it:

The Russians steal $1000 from you

You protest, and take them to court

They give back $20 and say “see, we made a concession”.

Russia? LOL. The author should visit some Indian reservations across the country and see what happens to people who make a deal with the United States.

Russia moved into Georgia as response to yet another NATO Orange revolution and coup attempt. My classmate in my foreign service training class (nearly 6 months) called me to say as a communicator he and the ambassador were going to be the only ones left in the embassy while Russia was stopped at Bridge. The coup was adverted in Georgia. My friend was literally afraid they would die because as he said, WE Fu<ked Up and Russia dealing with the situation.

Moldova is complicated situation since Russia has an entire region with a major arms and ammuniton depot - also they were in that area as a peace keeping force - NATO again bought the politicians and backed them against Russia.

Ukriane - Famously Joe Biden drew attention to his (and Obama’s corruption) when he was just the LITTLE Guy when he bragged as VP how he was holding up 1B USD unless they fired the Investagator closing in on the Administrations two key personnel (Obama/Biden corruption) back in 2014. This after the coup of 2012. Immediately after the coup the US Navy was in negotiations for the Crimera Black Sea HQ of the Russian Navy - and Russia was seeing how France and Britian were buying up the rights to all the Black Sea ports in Souther Ukraine Proper. Russia moved to secure their Black Sea Port in Crimeia. Now when Biden was the Big Guy he, his old boss, their gaggle of gays and NATO miscalculated their ethenic cleansing of Russian speaking peoples by further announcing plans to deploy the same dual use missiles in Poland into Ukraine on the Russia border - those missiles per the military tech’s could be changed from defensive warheads to offensive (either nuclear capable or conventional) in under one hour. UKRAINE WAS FOR SALE - ALL NATO/EU NATIONS GOT A CUT AT FIRESALE PRICES. The same thingt was going on in the late 90’s with Russian Business interests and Putin rose to power and put an end to the Corporate Raiders backed by the US Embassies and US/NATO.

Today, the G7 has be upshured by Blinkin as a deterrent to blocking Russia on the Battlefield and economically. BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China and the original 13 members of Brics are pushing the US out of two nations in Africa.

In July Russia will send 20,000 troops to Africa. China will soon follow. Russia will also send 30,000 to Syria. The remaining newly trained of the 300,000 July graduation or 250,000 are designated to join the 500,000 reserves and join their 390,000 currently engaged in operations in Ukraine.

Again, the US led by the African and Dirty Mindless Joe have miscalculated badly. Brics is going put over 65% of the world’s population out of reach of US Markets... we were masters of the World excluding Iran, Syria and N.Korea at the beginning of this self-inflected debacle.

Our use of Ukraine to attack Russian soil has recently resulted in two US 155mm plants have explosions or fires, and one in Britan. It seems the US was trying stop Ukraine from attacking Russia Oil but now the war is spreading to the homelands of the NATO-CONS. It is fitting that one plant in PA had an accident - which many in the US attributed to woke and unqualified hires demanded by the Bite-me Administration.

July isn’t even here and Russia is already exploiting their Drone superority on the front lines.

Units facing those drones are now demanding rotation off the front lines and ther replacements are refusing to backfill the positions, resulting from the hell on the battlefield caused by drones (initially Ukraine touted their success and every Uke soldier knows how lethal they are), and the FABs.

61B - 10B for Administrative Operations; 40B to pay for already delivered assistance.................

Don’t try to make sense of it. It isn’t understood by many who do not wish to see it.

These are the people that still think America isn’t falling from inside.

Fury, as of today, 23rd April 2024, there is close to zero (but not zero) chance of all of Ukraine being lost due to Russian military advances.

There is a very low to zero chance for anything west of the Dnieper being lost to Russia - that chance ended when the Russians lost the battle of Hostomel Airport.

So, your question is more “If Ukraine is in danger of losing the territory that Russia already holds in the Donbas or a little more, do you ....”

And you’ve given a limited number of options - which are strawman arguments.

The ideal scenario is/was for Ukraine to have retained control of all of its pre-Feb 2022 territory or even pre-2014 sans Crimea. That is a low possibility at this stage.

Right now, for Ukraine to survive, what is needed and was done, was a show of support.

Russia needs to be convinced to leave Ukraine alone for the next few decades (that is a come down from my earlier hope that it could be longer)

There are multiple errors in your statement

1. NATO is formed by countries who want to join an alliance for defense, to protect themselves form Russia. Russia invades non-NATO neighbors

2. NATO has bordered Russia since 1999 and not threatened Russia - that is a made up story

3. Russia bordering you means that it will aim to conquer you at some point. there was a chance in the 1990s that it could change, but that ended in 1999 with the accession of Putin
