Cars will slow down if drivers are speeding under EU safety tech in new cars
Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | 04 28 2024 | Sarah Knapton

Cars will beep, vibrate or slow down if drivers are speeding under new mandatory safety technology which comes into effect this summer.

From July 6, new vehicles sold in the European Union and Northern Ireland will be fitted with intelligent speed assistance (ISA) to prevent accidents.

Although the UK has opted out, meaning it will not be a requirement on British roads, the technology will still be installed in most cars, and drivers can choose to switch it off on a daily basis.

Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, an independent research organisation, told the Sunday Times: “I think many motorists will tire of switching off ISA and they will just learn to live with it.”

Mr Gooding said it would take autonomy away from drivers, with cars increasingly deciding what drivers can and can’t do, and said it was the beginning of the end of people choosing cars based on top speed.

ISA has a forward-facing camera that can recognise speed limit signs and is integrated with GPS mapping data so the car always knows what limit applies to its location.

I got rear-ended by a truck yesterday...I may have to consider buying a new car that I hope will take me to the end of my life, so I don’t have that crap!

I think it would be far easier to implement in EV’s but I know it could be done in ICE vehicles too.

And it will take someone who programs PCM’s about a day to figure out how to defeat it.

Won’t be “some coder”, it will be an AI “hackbot”.

Actually, the defensive measures are getting quite sophisticated. First, everything is integrated into the ECU (no more separate black boxes where you can snip the wires and connect a resistor or even intelligent circuit), and every logical electronic component has to be present and respond at power up time or the vehicle won’t start or goes into degraded mode.

That sort of thing would quickly be made into a felony, while Tik Tok continues to show videos literally instructing
feral ‘teens’ on how to break into Kias.

Such videos have been around at least since 2022.

“I think it would be far easier to implement in EV’s but I know it could be done in ICE vehicles too.”

New cars already have the required electronics including a cell connection.

All it would take is a few lines of code.

Oh, sure. Nowadays, tyranny is only “a few lines of code” away.

If that.

I had to laugh...when I looked at my post after I posted it, I thought there was a typo there:

"Oh, sure. Nowadays, tranny is only a "few lines of code" away.

That too!

“And it will take someone who programs PCM’s about a day to figure out how to defeat it.”

It took 3 years to unlock the new C-8. Costs:

$1,500 to unlock your ECM
$400 for the MPVI3 OBD-II interface
$400 for 8 Universal HP Tuners credits ($50 each)

I just ordered a new 2024 GMC Sierra so I won’t have to deal with all that crap coming out in the next few years. After The Rats steal this election expect speed limiters and alcohol detection technology within a few years. Both are in the works right now with the latter being projected to roll out with the 2026 model vehicles, which will hit the showroom floors during the fall of next year. Between the new truck and my 2022 Subaru I hope to keep them running until I’m 80, which is just a short decade away. After that, my driving days will probably be limited, assuming I’m still around.

I recently bought a 2018 Toyota Sequoia with the same intent. I intend to keep it as my forever car. If I can get it to last 15 years, I will be in my 80’s. Might still be alive then.

Cars will beep, vibrate or slow down if drivers are speeding under new mandatory safety technology which comes into effect this summer.

EU officials are also looking into this technology as it might apply to drivers from particular political parties or voting histories as they are driving to the polls on an Election Day.

Sorry, I made up that last paragraph. But just wait 5 minutes.
