Sorkin: "SORKIN CHARGES: 'BLACKLIST' IS 'HAPPENING ALL OVER AGAIN'

SORKIN CHARGES: 'BLACKLIST' IS 'HAPPENING ALL OVER AGAIN' Fri Oct 26 2001 20:55:12 ET

Hollywood wunderkind Aaron Sorkin says America's surge in patriotism has a dark side: It has unleashed a "Blacklist" against those who decent!

"It's happening all over again," the WEST WING creatorexecutiveproducerwriter said this week in Los Angeles during a jam session "Post Terror America: Hollywood Reacts" at the Occidental Policy Forum.

Sorkin: "What is important is dissent... Bill Maher has been getting a pounding because on his television program he said something that some found controversial. It was a conservative talk show host in Houston that got the ball rolling down the mountain, and then sponsors began removing their advertising from the show, and now ABC, the network that he’s on, is saying that they may not do the show. We’ve heard this song before, right? In the fifties there was a blacklist, and it ruined lives. If you’re anything like me, when you watch any of the dozens of films that have been made about the blacklist, you look at that and think, my God, if I could only transport myself back in time to this period and knock a couple of heads together and say, are you out of your mind?"

Sorkin continued: "Well, we’re there, right now. It’s happening all over again. I think it’s right now when it’s most important that there be dissent. When the patriotism police should be kept at bay and that people understand that Bill Maher is every bit as much an American as you or I and let’s remember the values that we are protecting in the first place. My feeling is that those us who aren’t going to be driving the tanks in Afghanistan really what we can do for the war effort is to make sure that if you don’t like what Bill Maher has to say, change the channel. Write him a letter. But he shouldn’t be taken off the air. White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer should not get up and say Americans need to watch what they say..."

Does this mean we won't hear from people like Streisand and Fonda?

We can only live and hope.

Occidental Policy Forum.

If this is a product of Armand Hammer, then it has nothing to do with freedom of speech or patriotic USA interests.

I'm with you--too bad McCarthy is dead, we could use him now.

When the patriotism police should be kept at bay...

How DARE Sorkin say there should be no PATRIOTISM police? Why is it that he thinks he should have free speech and real patriots shouldn't? Dorky Sorky really p****s me off. (Oh, oh, old ladies shouldn't talk like that. Think I'll say it again--He p****s me off.)

Fact is, they CAN say whatever they want as Americans. But the rest of us can choose not to patronize their businesses, not to by ads during their shows, say mean things about them, boycott them, give them dirty looks just the same. This is also protected by the 1st Amendment

Where's the problem?

I don't have a problem until the government gets involved in handing out sanctions.

Just another whining Democrat, folks. It's what they do best.

Michael Savage just discussed this on his program. He said Hollywood, instead of admitting that they're going to be out of business for the scum movies they have been making (and will no longer be able to) unless they change, now resort to attacking Patriotism; he said the "doper babies" have figured out they can no longer attack pro-heterosexuals, pro-Christianity; pro-law enforcement and military....

If everyone who hates liberals just stopped listening to them and hiring them, Sorkin would call that 'blacklisting'. I'd call it common sense.

Come give it a try, tough guy.

The only thing that bugs me about Savage is how he cuts people off (and I'm not talking about the ones who obviously deserve it). He's very intelligent, and I've talked on his show back in November. I know he's got to keep the discussion going, but sometimes, he's a little too rough. Otherwise, I do enjoy him and he makes me think.

Last I checked, Rush Limbaugh, David Horowitz and Sean Hannity came out and DEFENDED Maher's right to say what he said.

How many liberals came out and defended Dr. Laura when the militant gay movement tried to put her out of work?

Answer: ZERO

But who cares, really? You didn't expect Shroomin' Sorkin to start acquainting himself with facts before spouting off, did you?

Why do these liberals think that the right to dissent applies only to them? When we dissent with their dissent, it's blacklisting.

It could not be because this warmed over second rate replay of the rapist-in-chief's life is less interesting than a bad Lost in Space rerun could it?

I like Savage but he has the tendency to talk about himself a lot sort of like Howeird Stern.

Hannity had a left-wing woman on his program that has written a book about the PC Police (funny how Sorkin doesn't care about those police) and she opposed the attacks on Dr. Laura, plus she's a lesbian and even she saw through the gay agenda's... erm... agenda. :)

Sorkin stated that ABC was going to shut down Maher's show. By Oct. 22, when he made these statements, it was obvious to everyone that PI wasn't going anywhere, except apparently to Sorkin. ABC never threatened to shut down Maher's show. And if Ari Fleischer had stated that Robertson, Coulter and Falwell should "watch what they say" (in a way I think he did in his later clarification) Sorkin would be applauding him and probably invite him to guest star on West Wing.

As long as the government doesn't shut him up he can say anything he wants...

No one has to give him an audience though...
