November 24, 2001 -- Is Harry Potter the spawn of Satan?
That's the opinion at one Christian school in southern Australia, where parents voted yesterday to forbid students from reading about the bespectacled wizard and his preteen cohorts.
The vote was just part of a widespread anti-Harry backlash by religious conservatives angered by the best-selling books' blatant celebration of witchcraft and the occult.

Please. In the "give me a break already!" category, this whole thread is an exercize in mental masturbation. Frankly, I'll never go see the movie. I simply don't care to. Someone above (and I wish I could find their post again) had it exactly right IMO: their parents taught them well enough, that when it came to things like this, their parents trusted their judgement.
I don't sit and wait for someone to "tell" me what to see, and what not to see. I trust my own sensibilities, and faith. I simply have no desire to go see this movie. I see absolutely no redeeming value in this, or about 99% of the rest of the crap Hollyweird puts out anymore.
HOWEVER last year some of the larger stores (Marshall Fields, Carson Pirie Scott) in downtown Chicago were decorated in a Harry Potter theme - for Christmas! This I found beyond insulting and no longer shop those stores, period. A "witchcraft" theme might be suitable for halloween, but definitely not for Christmas.
If I remember our discussion correctly you are referring to the rapture? Hardly discredited, still very much in discussion as it is supported by scripture. I guess we'll just have to wait a few years and see.
In any event, why try to slam this man just because he points out truth about the HP witchcraft invasion of our schools?

Born again believers will understand that it is not good or right or in the will of God for them to give place to this in their lives.......so they will dismiss the book..and the movie for what it is.
In other words, you're saying that, I cannot really be a "born again believer" because I've read Harry Potter and allow my children to read/see Harry Potter and have not dismissed the book.
If the shoe fits wear it! You will not go to hell for reading Potter or taking your kids to the movie,they are simply a symptom of deeper spiritual problems of rebellion and disobedience ..neithor of which marks a believer

I am sure of that..but interesting that you feel confident on the spiritual impact on your children...and the impact of your direct rebellion against the will of God..or do you care?

I see them as very similar to the homosexual assault on our children (Heather has two mommies?). There is a teaching guide out (Exploring Harry Potter by Elizabeth Scaher published by Beecham Publishing) that shows teachers how to incoporate these things into every aspect of the curriculum.
The non-Christians get all bent out of shape at the Christians when we try to get prayer or the ten commandments into the schools. The liberals and liberal wanna-bes scream out "separation of church and state" and "stop shoving your religion down our throats" and other such nonsense. But just once let us try to stop YOUR religion from being crammed down our throats and you start screaming at us as being intolerant and censorius.
Either all religions, including Christianity, are allowed or no religions, including secular humanism and witchcraft/paganism are allowed.
Since Christianity is not allowed in the government schools, harry potter and other pro-witchcraft propaganda should be allowed either.

Harry Potter is valid literature. It displays well constructed narrative, well developed characters, clean language and a plot line suitable for young readers. The answer then is yes, it is appropriate for schools. A hyperbolic attempt to compare it to a Pokemon cartoon is invalid, as you well know.
Fundie parents are stopping their children from reading Harry Potter, which is all fine and good.

It's ironic you should post that. We are in the process of planning to move into another home and we are in a quandery about what we are going to do with all these books, my daughter's and mine. They will easily take up a large room, and my wife has been vigorously campaigning for us to give them away or sell them, but we absolutely will not.
My daughter is a voracious reader with the largest library I've ever seen a 10 year-old have. Just because she has no "Harry Potter" books doesn't mean we are "interfering with" her "love of reading." Her love of reading is proceeding along just fine, thank you.
