Jacksonville, Florida Freepers???
11/26/1 | Myself

Posted on 11/26/2001 6:33:59 PM PST by caseyblane

My wife and I are moving to Jacksonville. Florida is as bad Georgia, two Dem Senators. Has anybody announced to run against one of them, I am assuming one of Florida's might be up for election in 02?

What does the Jax Freeper population look like?

By the way: I am graduating from college this December. We are moving so she can be closer to her folks. Anybody got a lead on a job in the area?

I live about 4 hours south of Jax, but grew up in Florida and went to college about an hour outside of Jax. Jax is a nice town. Nice beaches, waterfronts, and good nightlife. Good choice.

As for our senators. Ah yes our wonderful do nothing senators. sorry but Bill Nelson (junior senator from Melbourne) just got elected last year. First time elected to the senate. Expect a big waste of oxygen from this dolt. Bob Graham is the more experienced of the two but he's not much more than Nelson. Not sure when his time is up, but my god this guys been in office in some capacity for what seems a lifetime now. First, he was the Governor of Florida, then became a senator. That has to be at least 20 years in public service. He's gonna be hard to oust.

Now one race that is coming up in 2002 is the Florida Gov race. Jeb Bush against Janet "Waco" Reno. Reno's gonna get buried. That should be fun to watch.

Well hope that helps out a little. Sorry if it wasn't the answers you were looking for.

Jacksonville:
Hugely republican
some real redneck areas
very few cultural events
very family friendly
Mandarin area is fastest growing for yuppie families, tech jobs
Orange Park area is for soccer moms and great schools.
Public transport almost non-existent.

Dittos what Joan said in reply number 6, except she left out one very IMPORTANT item: Jacksonville is FOOTBALL FAN headquarters!!

We love the Florida Gators and Jacksonville Jaguars. There are also rumors that some folks here also cheer for that school in Tallahassee, FSwho? There's also a rumor of a few Dolphins fans, but most of them converted when the Jaguars closed Danny-boy Marino's career out with a 62-7 thumping on 1/15/00, man that was a Phish Fry for sure!!

I have lived in Orange Park, which is just south of the Jax border, for the past 9 years since I retired from the Marines. I had never lived in Florida before I came here, but you couldn't get me to move now. The only drawbacks weather wise are the heat and humidity and lightning in July and August. But today it's November 27, and the low was 58 with a high of 75. This is a nice fall. Winters are somewhat brief. Almost every year I've been here on Valentine's Day the mercury reaches 80. There is lots of sun and as well as liquid sunshine.

The newspaper, The Florida Times-Union, is very conservative editorially. They featured me on the Sunday edition front page, above the fold, leading a bunch of FReepers in a protest to stop the election theft attempt by ALGOR, in Jacksonville Nov 19, 2000.

If you have any other questions, FReep mail me.

Hey, don't forget--

Jax is a pretty big military town, with the Naval Air Station, and Mayport Naval Station close by!

I rode my bike from NJ to Orange Park in June. Orange Park is a really great town. I didn't want to leave when it was time to go. And the lightning shows are outstanding. You'll love it.

It doesn't look like any Florida Senators are up for election next year, see the link just below. I don't know how Georgia can vote in Bush by a 12% margin and still send 2 Dems to the Senate.

I grew up in Jacksonville and I agree with the 'feeling like heaven' sentiment. The majority of people down there are SO much friendlier than the majority of people up here in MA, it's almost like they belong to separate species, or something. I really miss it there.

I'm originally from the northeast (where doesn't matter...it's all the same). What I love about Jax is it celebrates a real southern culture without that annoying southern "inferiority complex" that causes them to lash out if you mention anything about "up north."

Jax has the confidence borne of success.

I live in Orange Park, the people are nice, Blanding Blvd. sucks!!! We are having a house built in Argyle, it will be ready in Feb. We moved here from CA 9 months ago, to get our kids out of the schools and to buy a nice house ect. Glad to get out of CA & we will never go back. I like the jr.high my son goes to, but took my older son out of the high school. He homeschools and is doing great. Football is a religion here! Nice beaches and St Johns river is beautiful. We are really glad my husband's co. moved us here.

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the info! I'm originally a Jax native, but we moved when I was 11. Looks like we will be moving down after Christmas and for starters we will have an apartment in Avondale/Riverside. I'm applying for jobs now. Anybody active with the local GOP? I've spent some time volunteering during the elections here in North Georgia and was a delegate at last year's Georgia GOP convention. If anybody can put me in contact with somebody at the Duval GOP I would appreciate it.

I moved from Jacksonville to Memphis, and I missed having some pro sports to watch for a while. In Jacksonville, we had the Jaguars. In Memphis, nada (at least until the NBA Grizzlies came to town). The Grizz are sucking wind right now, but the Jags weren't Super Bowl contenders by a long shot during their first season either.

I lived in San Marco and Mandarin, and much of my family is in Clay and St Johns Counties. I miss Florida, except for July/August's unbearable heat. :-)
