JERUSALEM (AP)--Palestinian militants attacked and severely injured a Jewish settler driving in the northern West Bank Monday, and one of the assailants was killed in the ensuing shootout.
The attack was carried out by three members of the al-Aqsa Brigades, a militia associated with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah, according to a caller to an Associated Press reporter in the West Bank city of Nablus. The assailants shot at the Israeli as he was leaving the settlement of Einav, near Nablus, the caller said.
The Israeli was seriously injured in the chest, army and rescue officials said.
The caller claimed the attack was a reaction to Israel 's decision not to allow Arafat to attend Christmas Eve services in the Bethlehem. No reaction was immediately available from the Palestinian Authority.
The caller said the settler returned fire and killed the man, and Israeli radio reports confirmed that account. The Israeli army spokesman's office was checking to see who shot at the assailants. The caller also said the unharmed militants approached the settler and took his gun after the shootout, assuming he was dead.
The shooting was the first in about a week in which an Israeli was injured. Last Sunday, Arafat called for an end to violence in a televised appeal to his people.

Somehow, it's hard to believe in the sincerity of the words of the Father of Terrorism.
The lying hypocrite wants a peaceful evening in Bethlehem? How about the thousands of Christians who would enjoy such an evening, but can't, because of Arafat's murderous henchmen?
Palestinians would be enriched by such visitors...but of course, Arafat couldn't care less about the Palestinian people.
The Arabs of that area will never know peace, until they stop supporting 'leaders' like Arafat, who invented modern terrorism.
