A 72-year-old woman is one of three members of a Green Cove Springs family now in jail, accused of selling marijuana.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office arrested Elnora "Granny" Layfield, along with Michael and Linda Layfield, last Friday in their Stauffer Street home. Officer seized approximately 30 bags of marijuana valued at $1,200 from the house.

Police said that undercover officers bought marijuana at the home on four separate occasions prior to issuing a search warrant. When officers entered the home, the elder Layfield was found sitting in a living room with several bags of marijuana.

"It's unusual to find someone her age selling pot, but she's not the first and probably won't be the last," said Lt. Larry Thompson, who heads up the Clay County Drug Task Force, which co-ordinates the efforts of the sheriff's office, the Green Cove Springs and Orange Park police departments.

All three suspects were charged with possession, sale and delivery of marijuana over 20 grams, a felony with penalties of up to five years in jail upon conviction.

Elnora Layfield has two prior drug-related charges.

"Maybe a little jail time will send a stronger message to her -- because probation isn't working," Thompson said.

As I have said before, compared to alcohol, pot is as close to "harmless" as you can get.

I wouldn't smoke pot if it was legal unless I had a reason like pain from cancer, being spaced out isn't what I'd enjoy ---- I think it should be legal like alcohol because why should I pay taxes if I drink a beer or whatever and the potheads get by without paying taxes. I know people who smoke pot the way many have one beer, just to relax but not get very messed up and I never heard of anyone robbing a bank for pot money. It's probably not safe in large quantities though ---I'm sure it's not.

I don't think there are any marijuana overdose cases on record. Earlier in this thread, someone said researchers tried to get some mice to overdose by force-feeding them the equivalent of something like 7 bushels worth of marijuana smoke. The mice died of carbon monoxide poisoning, which is no surprise and no condemnation of recreational marijuana use.

It's in this mess somewhere, FYI.

Codie needs a serious reality check. Or at the very least, a gin and tonic.

No, that is what reasoned debate is for. My 'quibble' with you is your inherent disregard for the Constitution, more specifically, the BOR and Amendment #2.

Why? Laughter is just about the best part of sex.

I disagree, I think the Gov't should be forbidden from taxing any commodity that it's lied about, as punishment for lying.

You seem to cling to a wide variety of beliefs which conflict with the spirit of freedom loving people. Pick one, we can make a game of it. I hope it keeps you awake at night knowing I'm a much better shot after I've had a couple bong hits.

That is completely untrue. There are many, many areas that you and I can disagree on and still debate civilly. Your desire to take away my RTKBA is not one that I take even remotely lightly, though.

As you like. I don't even take me real serious sometimes. Ideas are a different matter. There's a lot of them floating around here. You'll have to decide for yourself which ones ring true, and which ones have the empty thud of dogma. But you have to get close enough to them to give 'em a good whack to find out. Luck.

All the evidence I've seen shows marijuana to be benign. It's not addictive, and causes no health problems for the user.

Smoking Mariujuana gives some people bronchitis. While it's not as dangerous as tobacco, smoking anything is unhealthy. If the user eats the marijuana instead of smoking it there is no health risk.

I applaud the police efforts in busting pill poppers, pot heads and clubbers, after all it is more important to get them of the street rather than those who just indulge in ordinary crime the type that involves a victim as well as a criminal.

Tony, cheers to you and London. Just don't forget to use sarcasm in your close as many here are not all that perceptive and could misread your intent. Obviously when you called the police were too busy busting a pothead to deal with a real violent crime ie a break in.

Not the claim that the THC remains in your fat cells for that long.

It's not thc that's stored in the fat cells, it's non-psychoactive thc metabolites.

I knew of no one that smoked pot that didn't have to go at least a week to feel completely sober. Is it different for you?

Most people are completely recovered the next morning. 24/7 pot smoker "burnouts" can take several months to recover full cognitive function. This in contrast to 24/7 alcohol users who never recover full brain function.
