Market share resides in Microsoft products...you have do to something when your on the (Linux)bottom.
Linux is quite wonderful on the server side. Even FreeRepublic runs on it. Microsoft makes some good products and they command the desktop. But you can do quite a bit on Linux for near nothing while the same project on 2000 Server will cost a mint. And with their new licensing Microsoft has a lot of people looking at Linux. I understand that Microsoft has been selling a lot of XP. And that's good because in many ways they are like the Wizard of Oz with a bit of Enron mixed in. If you study their financials. But I want to see a healthy Microsoft. It's good for America.
Anyone that thinks Linux is moving backwards is uninformed. See THIS LINK for some recent stats from just a few days ago. Linux is growing rapidly and it's in the more content critical areas. Web and e-business.

I sure hope Linux on Compaq works better than their website ...

"Something's not right about this site. " Care to share? 'Something'? Like what praytell?

Well, even though it costs $0.00 the web page still wants a credit card number. Could this be a scam to capture credit card information? I suggest y'all be carefull.

Well, why are all the links under compaq.com's domain and then this link goes somewhere else ??
http://compaq.directedje.com/ : This is where your link points to. Administrative contact is in austin.
compaq.com points back to Houston.
Just looks a little weird since it's asking for your CC number at the same time it states free. The other this is that the submit button seems broken.
To: Alas Babylon!
No credit card info needed. The bottom radio button is checked (Free)

Not anymore. I just took 7.1 off my box and gave away mandrake. Why use it?
To: Centurion2000
OK. I actually teach Linux using RedHat, so I want to see this product. I ordered it, and DID NOT submit a credit card. Kool!!!!!
To: RedBloodedAmerican
Why use it? Well, I thought that was obvious: so you don't get locked into Microsoft's perpetual software rental scheme.

Not anymore. I just took 7.1 off my box and gave away mandrake. Why use it? Because you develop revenue-generating commercial systems that run on it?
Otherwise, surf the web with MS. I do.
To: B Knotts
Har. Nope, I paid for a license, I own my version. So, no one has to buy Redhat?
To: Britton J Wingfield
Perhaps those here that can't order something for free from a web page should take the prerequisite course - Windows for Dummies?
(I'm running from this thread as fast as I can!)

No, it doesn't want a credit card. Leave it at the default settings and you won't need to enter in anything.
To: Britton J Wingfield
I ordered it thanks.
Actually, in the late '70s, early '80s computer companies gave away operating system and layered product manuals. Heck, I remember when service stations gave away maps and shaver companies gave away shavers!
