Funniest Slapstick Comedians Ever
Self | 1-25-02 | Self

Posted on 01/25/2002 12:45:02 PM PST by Temple Owl

I have always loved slapstick comedians. When we were kids, around 15 or 16, we used to go to the old TROC Theater in Philly and lie about our age to gain entrance.

The shows we saw, for the most part, would get a "G" rating today. The most popular comedian was Billy (Cheeze and Crackers) Hagan, who instead of cursing would say "Cheeze and Crackers." He goes down as my all-time favorite stand-up comedian.

Most of these did not use foul language. Among my other favorites, not necessarily in order, are: Bob Hope

Jonathan Winters

Red Skelton

Red Buttons

Bill Cosby

Flip Wilson

Bob Newhart

Jack Benny

George Burns

Jackie Gleason

Feel free to add or disagree. I just will not pay any attention to those who disagree.

My father was in vaudville in about 1912 or 1914 back in the days when Milton Berle was part of a dance team, Bennet and Berle. Consequently, My definition of slapstick is tightly defined. Sellers is not true slapstick. Sellers and Winters developed their own category of comedy which was halarious. Sellers as Inspector Clouseau will remain an all time classic.

Without a doubt my favorites would be Bob Hope (The Seven Little Foys is a personal favorite), anything Marx Brothers, Danny Kaye, Lucelle Ball (The Long, Long Trailer) and I'll throw Cary Grant in for good measure.

Skelton, Ball and Burnett are the 3 great redheads who made me laugh as I grew up. Dick Van Dyke was so funny too. Remember when he made the stuffed monkey throw him? Laural and Hardy were fantistic vintage stuff.

It seems as though standup is what is meant here and I agree that Bob Hope was one of the greatest at it. His style was classy. I miss the clean humor of Hope and many of his day.

If we were discussing who used to be a good standup comedian i would have to include George Carlin. In his earlier days he was great, but now I wouldnt go see him if he was next door. Too much raunch.

I second Leslie Nielson. The Naked Gun movies, Airplane, Police Story are a riot!

I also have a soft spot for the Carol Burnett crew, and Jonathan Winters (Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World anyone?)

Phil Hartman. I'm still saddened by his absence.

"Hi I'm Troy McClure -" - Yes I agree - but what about John Belushi
