"Baxter's Mercedes-Benz was discovered early this morning, stopped in the middle of a road. Inside, Baxter had a bullet wound to the head and a revolver at his side. Police confirmed that a suicide note was found with his body."
"The suit claims he sold a total of 577,000 shares of stock for a total of $35.2 million."
"In recent weeks, Mr. Baxter had been identified as one of the executives inside Enron who raised serious concerns about the company's accounting procedures. In a seven-page letter to former Enron chairman Kenneth L. Lay, Sherron S. Watkins, an Enron vice president, named Mr. Baxter as an ally who believed that the company was treading into dangerous waters with transactions among its partnerships, many of which were kept off of the company's accounting records."
"Cliff Baxter complained mightily to Skilling and all who would listen about the inappropriateness of our transactions with LJM," Ms. Watkins wrote.
So , You Shoot Yourself. Makes sense.

"I am not clear on where the wife was during this period. Are either of you?"
Just read thru a bunch of Stuff from many news sites and didn't notice any mention of her related to the time of the suicide. One note in the autopsy report regards his ring having been removed. Curious, that.

Has anyone asked the question "Why the He!! would a hit man use rat shot?" From the posted article:
"In addition, rat shot is the perfect murder ammunition, because unlike a solid bullet, there is no ballistics test that can match rat shot or snake shot to the gun that fired it."
They HAVE the gun, unless you are telling me he was shot with ANOTHER gun, then they took his gun, loaded it with rat shot, fired it (now two shots for someone to hear) and put it in his hand?
It is only "perfect" if you are looking for a gun. BTW I have fired rat shot and I still think it's dumb. Just steal a gun, shoot the guy, leave the gun.

Perhaps she got the message loud and clear and has faded away. I am curious about wives who can see, through their own eyes or others', something amiss with the deaths of their husbands and remain mum. Guess they don't want to commit suicide either.

One other thing: assuming that the revolver was Mr. Baxter's, how did it get into the (supposed) murderer's handsI don't think they've released the info determining whether the gun was his or not. I kept looking for this to pop up somewhere... but I haven't seen it.

It could make sense....No job, soon no money, wife left, soon to testify before congress, maybe prison time, harassment by the media, kids harassed in school, set up by former friends....

There is an irregular abrasion on the palmar surface of the distal phalanx of the fifth digit, which measures 1.5 centimeters... Such an injury... suggests that he had recently fallen to his left (consistent with being shot in the right temple) and attempted to break to fall by extending his left hand, perhaps on an asphalt road.
Uh, no, it doesn't suggest that. If he'd just been shot in the temple he wouldn't have reached out to break his fall. Brain shots are instant death.

It IS interesting, along with the asphalt like residue, that he would have that type minor injury, though. Had he just BEEN jogging, or was he headed out to jog? And at 2 AM?

What is most unusual about this (to me) is that he was one of the people who would NOT have been in trouble over Enron- he was going to tell stories that would have gotten others in trouble. What reason did he have to kill himself?

Just to get it on here ---
"But all these external facts about his life and career give few clues as to why he chose to take his own life with .38-caliber revolver in his car on 25 January."
I believe that was on a CNN site.

I know one of Baxter's sisters. The family is absolutely convinced this was murder. I initially somewhat dismissed this as the family's denial and their means of coping, but now it looks like they might be right.

Thanks for that insight! This guy seemed to be too much of a Threat to too many Players. He seemed to have made the decision to unload his knowledge externally, not just within ENRON. If they had CIA contact/placed employees in ENRON Security, well, they have access to some of the best exterminators there are.
RatShot, huh?
