Ark. First Lady Announces Candidacy

Sat Mar 16, 6:38 PM ET
By TOM PARSONS, Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas first lady Janet Huckabee announced Saturday she will run for secretary of state in the same election in which her husband is seeking re-election.

"I think this would enhance what I've been doing for the last 5 1/2 years" as first lady, Mrs. Huckabee told a crowd of about 100 people assembled for the announcement on the steps of the state Capitol.

Gov. Mike Huckabee introduced his wife, saying he was pleased to be standing up for her after the "many times Janet has been at my side when I was running, when I was losing, when I was winning.

"I'm really, really happy to think I might be able to squeeze in on her coattails this year," he said.

The Huckabees are Republicans, and Mrs. Huckabee said she knows of no other Republican who might run for secretary of state. Democrat Charlie Daniels, who is now state land commissioner, is the only other announced candidate for secretary of state.

The governor has no Republican or Democratic opposition yet in his bid for another four years.

The political filing period begins Tuesday and ends April 2. The primary is May 21 and the general election is Nov. 5.

Mrs. Huckabee, a 46-year-old mother of three, has gone bungee-jumping and accompanied soldiers on military exercises. Her hobbies include riding jet skis and kayaking.

She said her oversight of the Governor's Mansion and extensive renovations there since Huckabee became governor in 1996 provided her experience that would help her in office. During the renovations, she and her family lived in a triplewide home on the mansion grounds.

The secretary of state's office is responsible for the upkeep of the state Capitol and for maintaining state corporate records, election records and financial disclosure reports. The secretary of state does not answer to the governor.

Secretary of State Sharon Priest, a Democrat, is barred by term limits from seeking another term.

My cat, Pebbles, is seriously considering a run for a seat on the city council.

 About the First Lady
Janet McCain Huckabee, married to Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, was born on July 16, 1955, in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Having spent her childhood in Hope, Arkansas, she graduated from Hope High School in 1973 and attended Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia,
Arkansas.

Mrs. Huckabee, along with her husband, share a priority in making meaningful contributions to the lives of families and children in the state of Arkansas.
She accomplishes this priority through several programs as first lady.
First Lady Janet Huckabee
Janet and Governor Mike Huckabee have three children, John Mark, David, and Sarah. In addition to her responsibilities as first lady of Arkansas and spending time with her family, Janet enjoys flying, hiking, camping, horseback riding, and swimming.
 First Lady's Activities
Operation KidCare
To promote the health of children, Mrs. Huckabee serves as honorary chair of Operation KidCare in Arkansas and has traveled to all ninety-five health
units in the state, emphasizing the importance of age appropriate immunizations of children.
Smart Start
Working with this common sense initiative designed to give children a solid educational foundation, Mrs. Huckabee encourages parents to help prepare
their children for success in school and life by reading aloud to them starting from the time they are infants.
Read to Feed
In the near future First Lady Janet Huckabee will work with Heifer Project International's program "Read to Feed", giving children the opportunity to read,
while also providing support and empowering others around the world to create a better quality of life.
Keep Children Alcohol Free
Mrs. Huckabee has associated herself with this national program, and plans, along with Arkansans for Drug Free Youth, to conduct five teen summits on
alcohol to help discourage underage drinking.
Rapid Response Team
The Rapid Response Team has been created in response to the numerous acts of violence that have occurred in schools across the nation and in
Arkansas, as well as the deadly natural disasters that have in recent times touched the lives of so many Arkansans. The first lady has helped train high
school students in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Functional Disaster to assist when crisis occurs.
Habitat for Humanity
Mrs. Huckabee's involvement with Habitat has been on a multi-faceted level, from organization and fund raising, to the actual construction of the house. In
the spring of 2001, she will wrap up the highly successful First Ladies Build program in which a home was constructed in each state, with the
participation of the state's first lady or female governor, and will launch the next national , Women Build event, "Building a Legacy".
Main Street Tours
In May, during Arkansas Heritage Month, and in association with Arkansas Historic Preservation, the first lady will complete a nineteen city tour with Main
Street, a state and national program promoting the restoration of downtown historic buildings.

Hey, if Tipper Gore is being considered a legit candidate for U. S. Senate, Janet Huckabee can be Secretary of State of Arkansas.

What's Pebbles' position on the War On Catnip?

I'm pretty sure she's opposed to that........she's yet to write a position paper on the subject, but, as soon as she's thru napping (another 5 hours or so) I'll ask.

I know for a fact that she's completely against CFR (Cat Furniture Repair) proposed by Fifi the poodle

"The secretary of state's office is responsible for the upkeep of the state Capitol and for maintaining state corporate records, election records and financial disclosure reports."

This First Lady has a record of actually acommplishing something while her husband was in office.

Compare what she did to what Hitlery did!!

It would be a good thing to have her in charge of maintaining the election records. Maybe so many dead people in Arkansas will quit voting!!

I agree..........and my cat can sit on the city council.

It'll only become a problem if, for some reason, she has to swing the gavel.....

Do you think that Drudge etc. "leaked" the Tipper Gore running for Senate story on Friday with an eye towards this?

It's strangely similar (except for the personality of the principals).

Isn't Huckabee the one who created the "Tax Me More Fund" for liberals to put their money where their big fat mouths were?

Which they didn't, by the way.

The Democraps leaked the Tipper story to get the spotlight off Lamar Alexander, and then they parlayed the grass-roots Democrap euphoria over Tipper for Senate into euphoria over Tipper's endorsement of Clement (someone who probably doesn't excite the grass-roots folks as much). It was a good political move.
