LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas first lady Janet Huckabee announced Saturday she will run for secretary of state in the same election in which her husband is seeking re-election.
"I think this would enhance what I've been doing for the last 5 1/2 years" as first lady, Mrs. Huckabee told a crowd of about 100 people assembled for the announcement on the steps of the state Capitol.
Gov. Mike Huckabee introduced his wife, saying he was pleased to be standing up for her after the "many times Janet has been at my side when I was running, when I was losing, when I was winning.
"I'm really, really happy to think I might be able to squeeze in on her coattails this year," he said.
The Huckabees are Republicans, and Mrs. Huckabee said she knows of no other Republican who might run for secretary of state. Democrat Charlie Daniels, who is now state land commissioner, is the only other announced candidate for secretary of state.
The governor has no Republican or Democratic opposition yet in his bid for another four years.
The political filing period begins Tuesday and ends April 2. The primary is May 21 and the general election is Nov. 5.
Mrs. Huckabee, a 46-year-old mother of three, has gone bungee-jumping and accompanied soldiers on military exercises. Her hobbies include riding jet skis and kayaking.
She said her oversight of the Governor's Mansion and extensive renovations there since Huckabee became governor in 1996 provided her experience that would help her in office. During the renovations, she and her family lived in a triplewide home on the mansion grounds.
The secretary of state's office is responsible for the upkeep of the state Capitol and for maintaining state corporate records, election records and financial disclosure reports. The secretary of state does not answer to the governor.
Secretary of State Sharon Priest, a Democrat, is barred by term limits from seeking another term.
My cat, Pebbles, is seriously considering a run for a seat on the city council.

Who does the secretary of state report to??
I'm pretty sure she's opposed to that........she's yet to write a position paper on the subject, but, as soon as she's thru napping (another 5 hours or so) I'll ask.
I know for a fact that she's completely against CFR (Cat Furniture Repair) proposed by Fifi the poodle
Anyway, here's the Arkansas Secretary of State website...

This First Lady has a record of actually acommplishing something while her husband was in office.
Compare what she did to what Hitlery did!!
It would be a good thing to have her in charge of maintaining the election records. Maybe so many dead people in Arkansas will quit voting!!
I agree..........and my cat can sit on the city council.
It'll only become a problem if, for some reason, she has to swing the gavel.....
It's strangely similar (except for the personality of the principals).
Regards
J.R.
Which they didn't, by the way.
