The Discovery Channel was absolutely FLOGGING promotions of Ice Age over the past week.

Speaking of the Discovery Channel, did you happen to catch the one hour special on the battle for Ia Drang on Friday night? It covered both LZ X-ray and LZ Albany. It had interviews from Hal Moore, Joe Galloway, Rick Rescorla and several others. Seeing as how Rescorla (sp?) was in the documentary, I'm assuming that it was made some time ago and was dusted off to coincide with the release of We Were Soldiers.

BTW Ronnie, what ever happened to Basil Plumley in real life? I haven't ever seen him interviewed like Moore or any of the others.

...ALOHA oldvike...

...Sgt/Major BASIL PLUMLEY stays pretty much to himself, including IA DRANG-1965 Alumni Reunions.

...Last November we had the man who portrays him in .."WE WERE SOLDIERS".. SAM ELLIOTT ..lovingly mingling with real Heroes and their Hero Families in D.C. with the Real Deal Hero at home.

...He and Mrs. PLUMLEY were at our Ft. Benning GA Special Screening for IA DRANG-1965 Vets dressed in Civies and dressed in Army Dress Blues at the Los Angeles Premiere in Westwood.

...The PLUMLEYS =

...Ordinary Americans/Extarordinary Heroes...

Thanks Ronnie. I can't say as I blame Plumley for laying low. A couple vets here in my hometown are much the same way. Very humble people (and there's not a damn thing wrong with that).

My Dad was much the same way. He never, ever, talked about the war with me or my mother.

I hate to say this, but I have no intention of seeing "we were soldiers" until it comes out on tape. I understand it is quite violent, and I dislike violent action films.

HOwever, Ice Age is funny. A good comedy is always welcome, especially in hard times. Both will be remembered: do you forget Charlie Chaplin because you saw the original Ben Hur? Or do you forget Wizard of Oz because you saw Gone with the Wind?

.."WE WERE SOLDIERS" is "Quite Violent"...?

.."September 11th" was "Quite Violent" also.

...Both were REAL -&- IMMEDIATE 2-Many =

...Changed LIVES forever.

...Hiding Heads in "ICE" won't change this Reality.

...Better to LIVE IT than REPEAT IT...?

When I recommend the film to people, I do tell them to expect a photo-realistic
look at what happens at the ground level of battle.
I admit I feel secure in that assesment, having heard (IIRC) Galloway say that
the movie is about 85% faithful to what happened.

And I tell folks, it's a great film. I have only heard hearty agreement.

May I put a plug in for "The Rookie", starring Dennis Quaid as pitcher Jim Morris, a West Texas high school science teacher who pursued his lifelong dream to pitch in the majors at the age of 35. I saw the sneak preview with my 10 year old son and his friend - we were all completely drawn into it. A G rating, but the movie doesn't make your teeth hurt. Good old fashioned American values, and pursuing a goal with lots of hard work and grit. I thought it was excellent.

When it releases on 3/29, go see it. It is a wonderful movie.

Yes, I have told people about the war scenes up front as well. I warn them (if they are the squeamish type) but I tell them that it's more than a "war movie". While I don't want to give the whole movie away to them, I do describe one or two of the scenes that show that it's a movie about family, fatherhood, brotherhood, love of country (and not just ANY country but OUR FREE country), bravery, respect and other basic moral values.....

My husband and I viewed it first and then we took our 15 and 13 1/2 year old. We warned them about the scenes too but they did benefit from seeing the film. They saw heroes and the sacrifices paid by those heroes and their families on that screen. It opened a lot of discussion for our 15 year old. He had a lot of questions and public school wasn't going to provide the answers. Fortunately, my husband is a history major (particularly military history)and could discuss the subject.

We just sat there to the end of the credits. I couldn't move. I have difficulty finding words that are fitting. Words seem to ring hollow in my description of it but I thank all the veterans of all the wars Americans have fought (or are fighting) to protect our freedoms. Thank you!!!

Somewhat still a lurker....
