Almighty God , We make our earnest prayer that You will keep the United States in Your Holy proection, that You will move the hearts of the citzens to cultivate a sprit of subordination and obedience to goverment and to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citzens of the United States at large. Finally we pray that You will most graciously be pleased to lead us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to conduct ourselves with that charity, humility, and peaceful, temper of mind which were characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religon, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplications, we ask You, through Jesus Christ, our Lord Amen
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never sound retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His Judgment seat; O be swift my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant my feet! Our God is marching on!
In the beauty of the lilies,Christ was born across the sea; With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me; As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free; While God is marching on.......
I hope the the President will read this and go to the capital and recite this!!!
The original lyrics, which came to Julia Ward Howe in a dream, were, ". . .let us die to make men free"
In 1870, Howe wrote the first Mother's Day Proclamation. Very different sentiment than found in the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have you and the State over which you preside, in his holy protection, that he would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government--to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their Brethren who have served in the Field, and finally, that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all, to do Justice, to love Mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, Humility, and Pacific temper of mind which were the Characteristicks of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a Happy Nation. I have the honor to be with the greatest esteem & respect Sir Your Excellency's Most Obedient and very Humble Servant
Go: Washington
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blessed with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
