What will help is to diversify our sources; Venezuela, Middle East, Mexico, Russia and the Caspian basin Countries of the former Soviet Union. With enough variety of suppliers not a one of them will be important enough that we can’t temporally tell them no thanks and go elsewhere.

But what if one or two got together and agreed we needed to be cut off? Take Venezuela for an example. Their oil company is state controlled. This is not a stable source at the moment. We need to stay powerful enough to take it if we need it or have our own supply to drawn on so we don't have to kow-tow to and/or support oppressive governments.
