No, this is awful!
I don't know where anything is anymore!
Where are the sidebars?
I used to go straight to them
to find out
what was going on.

Well, there are alot of members of this forum who are using Web TV, me included.

I'm still shaking my head wondering how ALL these changes came about without incorporating a "spell check" into the system? It would have made a difference. Oh well, I'll still have to keep my dictionary next to the keyboard :~)

This is the first day of the new format. Are you being a little pre-emptive with your decision not to 'hang around?' (At the risk of being presumptuous, I wouldn't want to be married to you -- at least not for the first tentative week or two... :)

I may not be a computer wiz, but I imagine the lag time problem takes more than a couple of hours to solve. They are no doubt at least beginning work (if only mentally) on it now. Enough people have complained that I believe their attention has been focused in that direction.

The WebTV/page slicing things have been a major complaint as well. And I am sure that they, too, are going to be addressed.

As for your other complaints, which are simply a matter of personal preference, rather than major inconvenience, don't you believe you can make accommodations in that regard?

You will not be 'shut out' of this forum. Your complaints are common enough that they will be addressed, given the appropriate time frame.

Patience is a virtue. Hang in there, huh?

I could use an on-board spell checker, also. I'm currently using the one in my browser and cut and paste back and forth. Must be that a spell checker cost's money to buy the rights to, and they are trying to get this up and running good enough to market. Well, the trial ballon they put up this morning got shot down badly!!

(I like some of the changes, but the "posts" page has got to go back to the way it was -- no left sidebar (use the top for selections) and Times Roman font.)

Stick a sock in it.

Let me reiterate: about 1000-1200 people here support Free Republic quarter to quarter. We have around 3300 distinct posters every day ... so I'm extrapolating but approximately 8 or so people use this forum during the week for every one person who finances its existance.

And, I know something about human nature. Let's take two threads ... one is the Freeper Canteen, one is an illegal alien issue thread. I am fairly confident if there are 15 poster in each thread ... 14 of the Canteen posters support FR financially, and 3 or so of 15 anti-immigration contributors pay. See, if you support something, if you are postitive and engaged and an optimistic builder ... you invest. If you are negative and univolved and destructive and disillusioned ... you're along for the ride.

It's not on the plate, but FR needs to charge a $25 entry fee here. A cover charge. Just to know that everyone on the forum has made an investment in FR's ongoing success. Let the Good Times roll, GOP, Libs or Reform, let's yakk it up. Anyone unwilling to pony up $25, we'll watch your Civil War and Immigration Debates on Community Access.

No sock in it, the grievance here today was embarassing ... but some folks have no shame. Whatever. If you are a proud and dignified human - and you are being humiliated, hurt and injured on an Web portal ... hit shutdown, open the front door, hug your wife or kids and enjoy life. Take your little boy out to the country and be cluelessly bonded in the most sanctified manly way with him. "That smell is pig shit son." Don't stay logged into here if it's a perpetual pummeling to your principles. If you don't want to take something, don't take it!!!! Change it, or leave. If you are willing to take something, be honest and understand the tradeoffs you've accepted.

Jim and John Robinson are NOT attacking Freepers with anything. They aren't trying to isolate, muzzle ... they've got bigger priorities. I sit and watch threads like this in a surreal amazement. What manner of person could craft an emotional and overwrought opposition to a change in the software interface of a Website? I don't believe it's real, and my annoyance is that I KNOW that the bulk of the noisily upset here don't contribute to the team.

I hate cookies too. If you're using IE, you might try doing [tools] -> options -> Security...
Under "Internet zone", select "Custom Settings" then disable cookies. Then go to "Trusted Zone", enable cookies and put FR in the trusted zone. I use that for java, etc.

Problem with that & cookies is it's impossible on other sites where you want preference cookies, but not the others.

Because of that, I downloaded Cookie Pal. I am a minimalist - don't like toys & playing with shareware, but this program has been a Godsend. It's small, zero bugs, and allows you to see every individual cookie offered and select "accept," "reject," "always accept", "always reject" and "reject all from this domain". After a few days surfing, you will have created your own custom filters.
I couldn't do without it.

(BTW, I have no interest in the co, lol. Just a happy user. =] )

You know, I've been watching you all day try to walk the line between "bad manners indulgence" and "good old buddy"persona. Do you REALLY know WHO the actual donors are to FR.....and the amount of their donations? Or are you just using the 'donation' issue as a strawman to divert the attention each and every time you decide to indulge your bad manner tendencies--and someone calls you on it?

I would HOPE that ALL donations and donors to Free Republic are private.....and, excuse me, none of YOUR business?

Wow. Mark this as the first time I might not completely agree with something you've said. LOL

I do agree in principle that everyone ought to contribute. But if by forcing a "cover charge", you mean something like The Well, or what Salon did... It would shut off too many people at the pass. It would be a practical and fair solution to require a registration fee to enable posting and more complex preference settings... Is that what you meant?

"When the new and UNIMPROVED is incompatable with one's system, be it WebTV or a slower loading computer, " getting used to a new system " is an impossibility."

I have a moderately high speed link (On average just over 1.4mb) From the time I clicked on the hyperlink to this thread until the thread was completely loaded was something in the neighborhood of 30 - 40 seconds.

Now that's fairly fast, but it used to take less than 3 seconds to do the same job before someone messed with the system.

I suspect that the server on the other end is dishing out a lot of crap that is not really necessary to read these messages.

I have saved all of the links to the various news sources. Today I spent a good deal of my online time going directly to the source. I did miss out on some of the dialogue that I enjoy reading here but lately this place is getting to look a lot like usenet, and I can do without most of that.

Jim, bring back the old format! Please.

FRONT: mixed breed whose right rear leg has seen better days? (mixed it up with a big cat with an attitude?)

REAR: (sweet-disposition, senior citizen) golden retriever?

Yours?

Nice loveable cannine break from all this infernal griping. Thanks. :)
