District denies discrimination complaint by student's dad

EL CAJON – A parent who doesn't want his daughter sharing high school restrooms with lesbian students has filed a discrimination complaint against the Grossmont Union High School District.

Paul Scott's complaint, filed last month, alleges discrimination and intolerance of him and his daughter by "not addressing a very clear right of privacy violation that requires my child to share restrooms, dressing rooms and showering facilities with those who by their own, and societies (sic) definition, are attracted to the same gender (homosexual students and staff)."

After receiving the complaint, the district conducted an investigation as required by state law. Last night, trustees accepted a district report that found there was no discrimination.

Scott has spoken at board meetings and written letters to the district about the issue for more than a year. There has been no allegation that students or staff have made sexual advances to other students in restrooms, trustee Ted Crooks said.

Scott said the district has ignored his concerns and the issue has adversely affected his family. He declined to comment yesterday and did not attend the meeting.

Superintendent Granger Ward said the district has responded to his concerns. But he said what Scott wants – separate restrooms and locker rooms for students and staff who are or are perceived to be gay or lesbian – would be illegal.

"We do not see a resolution that he finds acceptable that is legal and appropriate," Ward said.

Crooks said the district has acted lawfully. It has spent time and money on this issue that could have been spent on education, he said.

Trustee Gary Cass, however, said he will ask if there are some accommodations that can be made for students with modesty concerns. He expects the issue in Scott's complaint will be resolved in the courts, Legislature or some other level of government.

Once Scott is notified in writing of the board's decision on his complaint, he has 15 days to appeal to the state Department of Education.

If there really a problem here (which I rather doubt), it would make a lot more sense to insist on a restroom monitor being present, to ensure that nothing is going on in the restrooms which would make it apparent who is gay and who isn't. This would also eliminate smoking, illegal drug use, and bullying/physical assaults in the restrooms.

Yes. They need a monitor. Anyone availing themselves of the facility while producing a Shore rating any higher than the eraser on a #2 Eagle pencil eraser would be disqualified.

BUT - if the gay/lesbian students "demanded" their own facilities, how many heartbeats would it take before the school board caved and gave it to them? All in the name of "diversity" and "tolerance", of course.

We sure are going to need a lot of new restrooms. We'll have to have STRAIGHT MEN, STRAIGHT WOMEN, GAY MEN, GAY WOMEN, BISEXUAL MEN, BISEXUAL WOMEN, TRANGENDER MEN, TRANSGENDER WOMEN, TRANSGENDER MEN WHO STILL LIKE MEN, TRANSGENDER WOMEN WHO STILL LIKE WOMEN, (I swear I saw something like that on Jerry Springer--a woman who became a man but still wanted to have sex with men, or, maybe it was a man who became a woman but still wanted to have sex with women. I think.)

I suppose what you describe is a reflection of seeing sex as a spectrum, rather than either/or. Those of the either/or camp have so much less to deal with.

Yeah, and this isn't fair or equitable for us hetrosexual, non-deviants. Why should the faggots and lesbos be able to shower with the objects of their lust and not us? That isn't fair!! Hell, it is discriminatory!!

I large company I worked for had a strong pro-gay support/ recruiting structure. It bothered me that in this environment there were no modesty screens between urinals.

One day it was discovered that a maintenance person had found a way to the ceiling above a woman's restroom and was voyeuring (is there such a word?) on the occupants. A division meeting was called to calm the concerns of the users promising a thorough investigation and prosecution of the bad guy. Counseling was offered, etc, etc.

I was tempted to suggest that the perpetrator may have merely been a lesbian trapped in a man's body and therefore created no reason for concern.

Remember the punch line on the advantage of being bisexual--twice as many chances to find a date for Saturday night.

Didn't work for me; my ugly was omnisexual.
What you said reminds of the advantage of having Alzheimers's.
You know, you're always meeting new people. :)

What an interesting story. They won't allow straight boys, who are attracted to girls, in the girl's bathrooms but they'll allow lesbians with the same attractions....... Not certain if this daughter/family has a true problem with the lesbians or are they making a statement/point? And a great point "NatureGirl"...the GLBT groups get schools to jump when they cry discrimination....

Perhaps there is a deeper point to be made: That one should stop looking at women as potential victims and encourage them to stand up for themselves. I would be ashamed to have raised a daughter that was so fragile she couldn't look out for herself in the women's bathroom at school.
