PRESS RELEASE: CFAA calls for denial of sacraments to Governor Gray Davis

Austerlitz, NY - April 4, 2002 - In an article titled Spiritual Frankensteins published April 3, the Catholic Family Association of America (CFAA) called upon Bishop William K. Weigand, of the Diocese of Sacramento to publicly deny California Gov. Gray Davis reception of all sacraments but that of repentance, and to excommunicate him from the Catholic Church if Davis persists in public scandal.

Stating that Davis' creation of a task force to advise him on how to bring Vermont-style homosexual "civil unions" to California was the last step in "...placing the fuel about his person for the spiritual self-immolation he apparently seeks", Timothy A. Chichester, President of CFAA, went on to say that "The Culture of Death so ardently supported by Davis, as witnessed by his many anti-life actions, is back-lighted by his mindless advocacy of homosexual marriages, disguised as "civil unions", the very essence of scatologicaly centered sterility in which one man pretends to be a woman while another pretends that it is so."

The CFAA holds that in the face of such effrontery by Catholic Davis, Bishop Weigand needs to take a publicly active leadership role lest his response be interpreted as acquiescence to evil, a failure to protect his flock. Chichester cited a Vatican 'Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons' which states "The church has the responsibility to promote family life and the public morality of the entire civil society on the basis of fundamental moral values, not simply to protect herself from the application of harmful laws."

Chichester noted "It is the CFAA position that the failure of bishops to consistently and loudly teach that it is a grave sin to knowingly vote for pro-abortion politicians has resulted in their nurturing spiritual Frankensteins such as Davis."

He went on to say "Indeed, as the realization grows that one present crisis in the Catholic Church is the inability of homosexuals to live an ordered life in the presence of the strictest moral code in the world, it is incumbent on all the bishops of California, and the nation, to loudly and publicly condemn the civic institutionalization of this grave disorder as a public good."

Do we know that use of this hormonal abortion agent will not cause more breast cancer in women?

Honestly, given its intermittent use, it will be difficult to prove the link. But I'm sure there is some small risk.

An excellent article. I am Catholic and would like to be on your bump list.

Please correct me if I'm wrong - I thought that the only way that a lay Catholic could be excommunicated was if he/she participated in an abortion. Davis' strong support of abortion is probably grounds for excommunication. His support for gay marriage (which is horrible) is not grounds for excommunication.

Nevertheless, the principle of informed consent would state that it is important to inform women who may use hormonal EC about this possible effect so that they can choose based on the best available information. Regardless of the personal beliefs of the physician or provider about the mechanism of hormonal EC use, it is important that patients have information relevant to their own beliefs and value systems.

This is an important sentence. Unfortunately, the far left pro-aborts do NOT believe in informed consent. They would rather deny women information than have a woman "choose" to continue a pregnancy. I fear that more and more women are going to die, become sterile, develop cancer, and be permanently scarred emotionally because the political agenda of the Left demands that abortion rights be put before all other rights, particularly the right to know (informed consent).

Bishop Weigand is a solid pro-life Bishop, but he's not the most political or eloquent speaker. I don't know who would be a good choice ... but I agree with you, that someone high up needs to stand up and tell Governor Davis that he can't have it both ways -- he can't claim to be a Catholic and then turn around and go against all teachings of the Catholic Church. Abortion, gay marriage, contraception ... all of these issues the Church has unequivocably taken firm stances against ... and good Catholics must either publicly agree, or keep quiet and pray for forgiveness.

This thing needs to be brought to ahead. There has to be a Catholic Bishop of Cardinal in California who is eloqent and able to say, "I'm sorry, Davis. You are not a Catholic. You are an abortionist! Therefore you can't take communion anymore in any Catholic Church!"

We must start with prayer first!Let us all pray sincerely and whole-heartedly for Bishop Weigand.

Let me suggest that Davis will only be denied the Sacraments after
lay people print up leaflets saying

"I'm sorry, Gov. Davis. You are not a Catholic. You are an abortionist! Therefore you can't take communion anymore in any Catholic Church!"

and put them on every car at every Mass at every parish
. There is precedent for this kind of lay action accomplishing such a goal.

Now many apparatchiks of the AmChurch will say "Who are you to say this?" But don't worry about them. They are already six steps into Hell as it is. But if lay action sets the tone -- I am talking about huge widespread lay action -- the bishops who are tired, frightened, angry, and afraid -- will eventually follow.

I never thought I would live to see such a day, or imagine that I would write something like this post. But when the flock is without a shepherd, I guess the sheepdogs still need to do their job.

Both strategies sound good. I just wished that the shepherds would help the sheep dogs on this issue!

Padre, your post was courageous, sincere and represents an attitude that must be adopted by Catholics around the world.

Prayer to encourage the return of those who have left the Church ideologically is in order, but there comes a point when it is time to "clear the Temple of the money lenders".

God bless

The Catholic Church will create another "Martin Luther," if they excommunicate Davis.

Good! Maybe he can start his own sect and take all the 'Catholics for Free Choice' and Log-Cabin Catholics with him. I think he'd look good in a mitre.

I will write a letter to Bishop Weigand this week. I believe that he is a good and holy Bishop with his heart in the right place. Do you have suggestions on a reverent tone and commentary? Thank you and God bless!

My ideas are:

1) Pray for the bishop before you write.
2) Tell the bishop how important it is to you that he is a successor to the apostles;
3) Thank him for exuding a good an holy character -- which the faithful need to see in a bishop.
4) Tell him that there is great confusion over pro-abortionists receiving the sacraments of the Church;
5) Ask him to speak out with apostolic clarity so the confusion can be put to an end -- since confusion does not come from God but from the enemy;
6) Assure him of your support if he would make a declaration that pro-abortionists and others who undermine the teachings of the Church may not receive the sacraments;
7) Specifically ask him to call Gov. Davis to account because if the high and powerful need not follow the teachings of the Church why should the ordinary Catholic follow anything a bishop says.
8)Close by thanking him for being your bishop, and promise to pray for him daily.

Those are my suggestions. Feel free to use any or none. And God bless you, Gophack, for taking the time to write to your bishop. What you are going to do is very important.
