One can keep it in some perspective that everyone is subject to some level of sexual temptation. Since the main categories in Catholicism for evaluating sexual behavior in the past have generally revolved around concupiscence, temptation, sin, grace, purity, chastity, etc., it's not entirely suprisising that many clergymen did not understand that homosexuality and pedophilia are compulsive, long-term psychological syndromes and disorders with their own special networking organizations, subcultures, and sociological variables ( as the Medeiros letter partly highlights). Some serious, devout, and pious Catholics would generally not be able to imagine the monstrosity on the scale of a Shanley. It's diabolical. In fact, what is going on is really in the category of the diabolical and abomination. These are harsh phenomena to face and deal with. But someone in authority is going to have to do it. I hope some Catholics step up and sue NAMBLA for plotting to launch criminal conspiracies using the Catholic priesthood as cover. Shanley should be sued for fraud and theft.
Don't forget the Internet - a major source for that kind of trash.
Yes, obviously. In addition to providing informational exchange for normal, law-abiding individuals, the net has also assisted the organizational networking of a variety of fringe subcultures, criminals, and extremist groups, including homosexual pedophiles and other deviants.
I have a friend who swears that the Windswept book is about real people, and he even has an identification key for the characters--provided by Malachi Martin.
There's far more. In my Diocese, priests no longer have to live in rectories (sort of a common life.) At one time, they were strictly instructed to be just on the unfriendly side of stand-offish to women, and to make certain that they were NEVER in ANY SORT of compromising position. And they had rules like the Boy Scouts when dealing with young boys---always another adult around, NEVER alone with a boy.
Of course, those 'rules' were not for 'mature adults.'
Yup.
I don't believe the above is de fide. It is based on popular theology and beliefs of some of the saints, none of which must be believed to be saved.
The devil is rampantly desparate and on his last digs of destruction on earth.
