Militant Islam Is Still Enemy No. 1

Militant Islam Is Still Enemy No. 1

G. Russell Evans

Captain, U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.)

Previous columns of mine have sounded the alarm about the ongoing threats of militant Islam against America – with documentation, including the Muslim holy book, the Koran. But not all of these columns saw the light of day. Some editors, I suspect, just don't like titles like "Sweet Talk about 'Good Muslims' Is Bad" or "Watch Out for the Muslims in America."

Why? Maybe they don't want to offend Muslim constituents. Or maybe they don't believe the threat is all that bad. Or maybe, in this case, they prefer profit to national security.

Even so, the threat is still out there as our strategic enemy No. 1, and will remain so – as any serious observer will agree.

'Busybody'

Playing the part of "busybody," I tried to alert the Hampton Roads captain of the port about shocking background I had researched on militant Muslims, but was quickly reminded that the Christian Crusades were just as bad or worse, and besides, he said, he had many other groups to defend against.

Undaunted but still the "busybody," I approached the editor of the Alumni Bulletin, thinking this background would be helpful. She seemed appalled at my presumption, saying, in effect, "Lots of Coast Guard people are Muslims, you know."

All true! All true! But what does the Crusades' bloodletting of a thousand years ago have to do with defending our country from murderous terrorists today? And what does defending against "other groups" have to do with protecting our ports from militant Muslims today?

And truly, the fact that some Coast Guard, Navy and Army people are Muslims is absolutely beside the point.

Repair to Rocking Chair?

So, instead of busying myself with the Islamic faith of the Muslims, spending hours in the library and then writing bad things about "good Muslims," why don't I, at this late date in my career, just repair to my rocking chair and let the world go by?

After all, silence could generate more friends, lower blood pressure and certainly produce fewer critics – except that one truism is so haunting: "Silence is the temptation of the informed man who finds himself in the minority."

Our country and our people are far too precious to be silent about – in war or peace. Moreover, our security and our conscience are bound up with the rest of the world today, and every citizen of every country is either with us or against us in fighting the war on terror.

President Bush continues to emphasize that point. When his diplomacy is rejected by our "allies," he moves ahead in the best interests of America, just as he does in military operations against terrorists.

Daniel Pipes Says

Veteran Middle East expert Daniel Pipes, now professor at the U.S. Naval War College, warned about the militant Muslims long before Sept. 11 and warns that the threat continues:

"If we don't make security our priority, I predict more hits by militant Islam, on a much larger scale than 9-11. I wish we would get serious without the spur of more catastrophes."

Understanding the Islamic faith and its goals is essential to defending against its boast to "conquer America." Mr. Pipes says, "Militant Islam is a rabid utopian ideology along the lines of fascism and Marxism-Leninism – [seeking] totalitarian means to overthrow governments and to dominate the world, much like fascism and communism.

For example, Yale University Muslim chaplain Zaid Shaker boldly calls the American system "against the orders of Allah." This is a political threat that is not taken seriously by our government.

Ayatollah Khomeini Again

Prof. Pipes reminds us that Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini was calling for "Death to America" in 1979 – and since then, some 600 Americans have been murdered by militant Muslims. And still the U.S. government fails to "proclaim militant Islam our strategic enemy" but instead goes along with blandishments about "good Muslims" and "true Islam" being a religion of peace. We should look at the record.

In the Koran, Allah tells Muhammad, "Fight those who do not believe in Allah ... those who do not accept the religion of Islam." (Surah 9:29)

Prof. Pipes makes the point that "profiling" should be a priority for airline security – focusing on names, behavior and passenger appearances instead of the current practice of random searches that often insult 80-year-old grandmothers. Qualified screeners should be hired, their judgments about suspicious characters accepted, and a little personal inconvenience cheerfully endured for security's sake.

Crusades Not Forgotten

The holy war between Christianity and Islam, the Crusades, has not been forgotten by the fundamentalist Muslims of the Middle East. In many respects, militant Muslims are still fighting that war, while Westerners only faintly remember it.

The "moderate Muslims" living in the West, according to reports, want a "moderate islam" without the violence and bloodshed that still seems like a "payback" for the humiliation of the Crusades.

The fundamental Islamic faith under the Koran, however, includes violence and bloodshed. Moreover, the prophet Muhammad was more successful winning converts to Islam in Medina with violence and the sword than he was in Mecca with peace and persuasion.

Even today, in countries with a Muslim majority, the government persecutes Christians – often with the blessings of the Islamic clergy. These are facts.

Let us also note that our "allies" in the war on terror, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan, routinely persecute Christians for nothing more than their professions of faith. This state-sanctioned inhumanity is legal under the constitutions and laws of these Muslim nations.

These also are facts that our media haven't told us much about as they go after more sensational stories and second-guess the president.

Meanwhile, militant Muslims continue to be a deadly threat to America's security and sovereignty. Our commander in chief is dedicated and deserves loyal backing from all sides, including "allies," media and, as always, the troops.

He proclaimed Iraq, Iran and Syria the "axis of evil." He should proclaim militant Muslims America's strategic enemy No. 1 in order to clarify, simplify and emphasize.

A similar thread appeared this morning;it is becoming accepted, that they are indeed the enemy.Holding onto to the Crusades as a battle cry, just shows how backwards these people really are.Christians committed unspeakable acts of barbarism, rape and pillage,a lot of times with bishops cheering them on.But that was 800 years ago!! Since then Christians and Jews have made up so to speak and moved on.

The age that we live in requires being civilized and a lot of these Muslim run countries are anything but.The rest of the world lives in the 21st century while Islam hovers around the 14th.

to dispose of this equivocation is quite easy, and I hope this serves well when debating twits: One cannot justify bad behavior by pointing out examples of it. Most well raised children understand this by age five.

Since Bill Klinton left us so weak and vulnerable, I don't think that we have any other chance than to use these...

.... and these.....

...and may the road to Mecca look like these...

Seriously, what was good for the Germans in Dresden, the Japanese in Tokyo, Nagasaki and Hiroshima, is good enough for the militant Islamic world. We are at peace with the Germans and Japanese, but with a two headed "Bush doctrine" we are all in danger.

Amen. However, we are like jackasses - to get our attention you need to wack us in the head with a 2 x 4. It is becoming apparent that we are going to sleep again, that 3,000 dead isn't enough. I hope that I'm wrong, that we don't wake up one morning to 300,000 or more dead, but I'm not terribly encouraged.

Ghost, you hit the nail on the head by comparing our support of Israel to our support of Taiwan. Let's see how the Israel-bashers on this board can explain why these two are different.

The point that all of these people need to consider is why we need to support both countries. IMHO, the reason is that both are bastions of democracy and freedom, immoveable rocks standing in the way of the twin evils of this world, Islamic fundamentalism and Communism. Both are small, yet immensely strong. Their strength comes not from weapons, but from their spirit. It is the same spirit that drove the generation of the Founding Fathers to fight against overwhelming odds against the world's most powerful empire, the same spirit that drove 300 Spartans to sacrifice themselves to give time for the rest of the Greeks to mobilize, the same spirit that drives anyone to fight for that most basic of human desires, freedom.

We abandon either or both of these staunch allies at our hazard. We are already in the opening stages of World War 3, whether most people realize it or not. Our enemies are the Islamic nations (most of them) and Red China. We need to wake up and realize this, to defeat the former before the latter is ready to fight. To achieve victory, we need allies, allies like Taiwan and Israel who know the enemy and have had success in holding them off, and who will never switch sides (can we really depend on Egypt and Saudi Arabia, for example?).

The anti-Israel crowd has been deluded by its hatred of Israel and its people, or perhaps by resentment over $3 billion/year of aid, or by love of the Arabs and their oil wealth. They need to see the bigger picture, similar to how we became allies of the Soviet Union to defeat Hitler. However, Israel and Taiwan are no Soviet Union - they are allies in the truest sense of the word, because we and they share similar systems of government and have similar aspirations. They are, in fact, more like the embattled England of 1940 than the Soviet Union. Let's support them the same way.

An additional consideration is the reaction among both our enemies and allies (as well as potential members of both groups): what does it say about America that it would abandon an ally of long standing, one which has our same values, in favor of those who are our declared enemies? We would lose allies in droves and gain enemies galore. A more stupid move could never be made.

There's a war on - let's roll!

He should proclaim militant Muslims America's strategic enemy #1...

But then he'd have to close half the public universities in the country.

Let's start with Berkeley.

In the Koran, Allah tells Muhammad, "Fight those who do not believe in Allah ... those who do not accept the religion of Islam." (Surah 9:29)

Bacteria and viruses are invisible to all except an adequate microscope.

Over the past century, ideas have killed more humans than germs.

Now the post office has been forced to irradiate the mail for our protection.

I believe that the safety of the West may be at risk and the only cure might be the irradication of ideas.......and possibly........the irradiation of it's radical disseminators

You are exquisitely, precisely, a sage and a prophet.

Actually, I beg to differ vociferously with that statement.

Yes, I sadly have to agree with you. They didn't hit us hard enough on 9-11, it seems. The wake-up call only lasted about 2 or 3 months, and we're snoring again.

Yep. Like I said, go listen to the Steel on Steel interview.

For starters, Muslims haven't a clue about their own history. If they did, they would know that the Crusades started as a reaction to the imperialism of Muslim ideology! Let's not forget that the 4th Crusade did as much damage to the Eastern Orthodox Church as it did to any Muslims.

I am sick and tired of the Crusade bashers who are ignorant of history. Muslims need to stop the propaganda and start with the truth!
