Powell in Egypt as Mideast tour ends without truce

Powell in Egypt as Mideast tour ends without truce
CAIRO, April 17 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin
Powell arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for talks with the foreign
ministers of Egypt and Jordan on the last leg of a Middle East
tour that failed to secure an Israeli-Palestinian truce.
Powell said before leaving Jerusalem earlier on Wednesday
that he would meet Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher because
President Hosni Mubarak was "indisposed".
Several Egypt-based analysts said Mubarak's decision not to
meet Powell was a deliberate snub to show his displeasure at the
outcome of the tour, but Powell shrugged off such a possibility.
"I spoke to President Mubarak the night before last so I
don't read anything into the cancellation," he said.
Foreign ministry sources said Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat had briefed Maher by telephone on Wednesday's talks with
Powell. Jordan's Foreign Minister Marwan al-Muasher had come to
Cairo after talks in Saudi Arabia, which along with Egypt and
Jordan has been at the forefront of recent Arab peace efforts.

Yeah, I heard that "he wasn't feeling well"..and that's why he cancelled the meeting.

Whatever. Yessir Arafat is unhappy, and called the meeting with Powell (through his aides) a "catastrophe", which means we must be doing something right.

And I also read that when Powell and Sharon emerged from their meeting that they were smiling and laughing.

Arafat pissed, Sharon smiling....works for me. I'd say the trip was a success.

Exactly. Arafat is now spouting all over the place how "ticked off" he is. Which, of course, means that we did what we intended. Whenever HE is complaining, that's a good thing. ;-)

. Palestinian President Yasser Arafat(R), in a picture handed out by his office, meets with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell in Arafat's Ramallah office, April 17, 2002. Arafat said Israeli troop pullbacks were a sham and one of his aides accused Israel's Ariel Sharon of torpedoing Powell's peace mission who will leave the Mideast after failing to clinch a cease-fire agreement. Finally.

Thanks, W.

Geezus, I tried to tell everyone on this board that the meetings with Arafat were just for show, designed to buy time for W, appease the Eurotrash, get the Arabs off the streets, and give the IDF time to wrap things up.

No one would believe me. Everyone was bashing Bush. Now, even El Rushbo has come around to the idea that this was all "strategery" (having read the Andrew Sullivan column that explained it all). Now, Arafat has been taken down a peg. He loses everything when Saddam is overthrown.

Oh, and one more thing. Bush gave notice on April 4th that Syria and Iran should "stay out" of the conflict. In today's speech at VMI, he said that the Taliban regime in Afghanistan was "the first" regime to fall in the War on Terror, implying that there would be others.

All remains on track, as I suspected it would.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

I saw about half of posters of the mind that whatever's going on is not what we see. We all hoped for an outcome resembling what seems to be the present situation.

Arafat being brought down a peg (nicely put, BTW) is an excellent outcome in itself. In the long run that may do more for the good guys than any other currently known outcome.

These people respect power not weakness.

Power buys time better than what happened.

W at his best, and in a form that should be applied by the Golden Rule.

Chris, as you know there have a few of us who have saying this whole thing was being done properly. Then, from Rush to the professional GW haters on FR, we have heard about how stupid and bad GW was.

In reality, Sharon has hammered the management team of the PA's the past two weeks and really made them an endangered species in Israel.

Your summary needs to be repeated and here it is again:

Geezus, I tried to tell everyone on this board that the meetings with Arafat were just for show, designed to buy time for W, appease the Eurotrash, get the Arabs off the streets, and give the IDF time to wrap things up.

So Chris, which despot Islamic Thug ruled country is next? Iran, Iraq, Syria or ??

You've got it. The speech in the Rose Garden was strictly for Arab consumption and GWB knew he would be blasted for his remarks by those in the media like William Crystal who only knows how to whine and complain. The difference between George W. Bush and flacks like William Crystal is George W. Bush has OUR best interest in mind and Crystal has HIS OWN best interest in mind.

You mean, which Arab goon will swing from a lamppost? Well, of course, it's Saddam. Saddam is the first domino, the one that sets the precedent, followed by Assad's boy, Bashir. Finally, the Iranian ayatollahs are sitting on a restive population.

Methinks Bush's ambitions are directed at all three countries.

Be Seeing You,

Chris
