I know that very little of what Larry raises is spent on litigation.
LOL
. Yep out of $26,580,814 in income for 2000, the eww spent the following dollars (4.6%) in pursuit of the stated goal of Legal
.
Description of Program Service TwoLegal-undertake legal action (file cases) providing representation or acting in the capacity of Amicus when Judicial Watch believes judicial/governmental officials or body have abused their public office or position in a way that violates the public trust.
Expenses
.. $1,240,262
Heck he got almost 1% in salary for himself so in effect he only spent his salary a little less than five times in pursuing legal actions.

I understand that. And since the vast majority of their income is spent on something other than their stated reason for existing, it raises questions which deserve answers. Frankly, I suspect many, if not most, non-profit organizations are abusing their status under our tax laws.
I am one of those lucky Americans who is paid a pretty good salary. I also pay an enormous amount of income tax. I have no way of hiding or shielding my income from taxes. I don't run a non-profit organization or my own business where I can deduct practically everything as a business expense.
Consequently, I'm a sitting duck for the taxman and I feel like I'm paying a lot more taxes, both in actual dollars, and in percentage of gross income than just about everybody else in the country. I can't cheat on my taxes, but a lot of people and organizations do. As long as they are able to get away with it, the tax burden keeps shifting to people like me.
I have trouble feeling sorry for people and organizations who get audited, and little sympathy for those who complain about it. Because of the way I get paid, I'm basically strip-searched by the government all the time. Misery loves company, I guess.

Actually, I fail to see why certain parts of non-profits' records are protected, anyway. Why aren't their donor lists made public, the same as political donations? Seems to me that this is a scheme for sheltering income from the tax man.
I would just as soon ALL non-profits make a public disclosure, including Presidential libraries and groups like Rainbow/Push. I would even throw in the NRA and The Heritage Foundation. All of them need to list donors and expenses as a matter of publlic record, if they are going to get a tax break.
How do we know Larry isn't getting all his money from the DNC? Or China?
To: Miss Marple
I'd like to see all non-profits closed by eliminating the enabling legislation... then let them stand upon their own abilities and see how far they get without tax breaks. Rainbow/Push isn't a non-profit I don't believe. Now Jesse has one or more and R/P gets a little funding from them.

I agree with that. Transparency is a good thing in a democracy, especially with an organization designed to shift tax burdens to someone else.
We complain that Enron was misleading the public by not being transparent with its partnerships. And rightly so.
It's not really any different with the non-profits.

Any chance we could see Larrys, Jesses, Al's and the Clintons all on the same day? it would be like Christmas in Summer!

Rainbow/Push isn't a non-profit I don't believe.
Correction in what I meant to say is I don't think R/P is a c3 type non-profit where the donors can claim a tax deduction for their contributions.....

Thanks. I just printed the Amended Complaint. Fact #22 of the Complaint reads:
Judicial Watch received notice of its exempt status on or about November 18, 1998. See Letter from Internal Revenue Service District Director to Judicial Watch, Inc. c/o Larry E. Klayman dated November 18, 1998, attached hereto as Exhibit B. Thus, Judicial Watch received notice of its final tax-exempt status at approximately the same it received the Audit Letter, which is extraordinarily unusual.
Just damning wouldn't ya say?
To: Howlin
Corruption within the IRS has been a well discussed topic among conservative circles during the past 8 years. So often discussed, that it has become a well known axiom.
To: Dog Gone
Well, you can still give money to charities and non-profits and have that amount deducted from your taxes.

I appreciate the fact that churchs and special interest organizations have tax-exempt status. I believe that this helps contribute to America being a "market place of ideas." You may believe that it is unfair that Judicial Watch spends large amounts of their income on fundraising, but apparently, their supporters do not seem to mind. Fundraising is a survival tactic for most non-profits and that is why there is so much emphasis placed on it. Just because you do not like some non-profit organizations out there does not mean you should do away with the whole system. Would places such as this forum even exist or have gotten started if non-profits were not tax-exempt? Non-profit status helps people with a vision get started and actually do something about the things that are wrong with this world.
To: JeanS
I guess we can expect a press release from Larry about "that" sometime soon.

I wonder how soon it will take him to file the lawsuit?
Larry Klayman is useless. I'm thinking of suing him for the money I sent to his organization.

What does non-profits and tax exempt have to do with Free Republic?

Do you reckon they know what 'eww' spends on fundraising? I doubt most of them do, but we'll never know as 'eww' doesn't tell them does he?
I have nothing against non-profits, I just prefer they operate on their own ability/nerits and not be subsidized. You know, less government don'tcha see.

LOL! So I have been living on this earth for 20 years without having any life experiences yet? That is the funniest statement I have heard all day. Congradulations Howlin, you have given me the memorable quote and biggest laugh of the day for me. I remember when I was 20; I thought I knew everything then, just like you do. And I acted like a idiot about it, too, just like you do.
Get back to me when you grow up and actually KNOW something that hasn't been force fed to you.

I see that we have now connected on a truly personal level, thanks Howlin.
Seriously, my beliefs about life have never been force fed to me. For example, even though my dad is a pastor, when I graduated into high school, he gave me the choice whether or not to go to church--I decided to keep going. The same goes for my political beliefs. My parents are both staunch conservative Republicans, but they never forced me to be like them; I just chose to.
