High Fire Danger Has Forest Officials Worried
Monday, April 22, 2002

BY MIKE GORRELL
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

Last week's wildfires in central and southern Utah confirmed what veteran firefighters already knew -- after yet another dry winter, a lot of vegetation out there is ready to burn.
"We had some pretty extreme fire behavior in that fire Monday in Parowan Canyon," said Vi Hillman, U.S. Bureau of Land Management fire information officer, reciting how quickly the blaze began and grew. "The conditions are dry. Not only the appearance on the outside, but inside the different fuels -- sagebrush, cheat grass, pinyon and juniper [trees], all that -- the moisture level is very low."
Jim Springer, spokesman for Utah's forestry division, agreed: "This is the earliest we've seen fires of this intensity. We're worried."
Consequently, acting state forester Karl Kappe declared a closed fire season last Monday in five southern Utah counties -- Beaver, Garfield, Washington, Iron and Kane. Permits will be needed there to do any open burning before Oct. 31.
"The closed fire season usually begins statewide on June 1, but conditions in these areas clearly call for this action now," said Kappe. "Fire conditions are worsening daily."

Pure idiocy! I don't know who's worse. The morons that filed suit. Or the brain dead judge that halted the sale. I guess they'll all be satisfied when the whole mess goes up in flames, destroying not only the entire ecosystem, but the grouse as well...

A permanent hold has been put on the sale of all contracts to harvest the 27 million board feet of dead wood . . . .

Could Judge Kimball be taking this personally?

I cannot put into writing what needs to be done here. This is a sick situation and along with a lot of the same sort of evil BS going on throughout our nation spells doom for our way of life. We need a war. Now.

Do people really build homes out of beetle infested logs (wood-eating beetles, I presume)? Just wondering.

The trees have been killed by a beetle infestation, but it is still wrong to put the dead trees to good use. Whatever...

John Horning, conservation director for the Forest Guardians

Hope his house burns first. I bet he has a redwood deck and hardwood floors too.

Reminds me of K.D.Lang. Peta spokesperson and almost singer who showed up at a Peta news shot wearing leather cowboy boots, leather belt and a leather hat band. Boy did that male reporter make her look stupid when he asked her if she knew where leather comes from.

Lumbermen will not be allowed to harvest dead trees. The dead trees are being saved for a huge, out-of-control fire that will devastate a large area, burn homes, kill wildlife, and endanger the lives of fire fighters. How to go, stupid judge.

Of course it wasn't. Some granola eating, tip toe thru the tulips, tree hugging moron convinces an idiot judge to make a decision that will harm the forest in the long run because dead trees are a big fire hazard and should be removed.
