One of the best bird shows I ever saw happened a few years ago in the fall....Great story! It's a wonder that the owl just didn't eat the crow -- must not have been very hungry, or must have been a smaller owl.
Owls and crows have a particular animosity towards each other. I've never seen or heard of the owls eating anything other than the hatchlings. Crows do the same to other birds.
