California voters -- by a nearly 3-to-2 ratio -- favor a proposed ballot measure that would largely prohibit state and local governments from classifying people by race or ethnicity, according to a new Field Poll.

The proposal by University of California Regent Ward Connerly is considered an extension of Proposition 209, his successful anti-affirmative action measure, and could once again inject heated debate over race into a gubernatorial election.

And since we know the Field Poll is one of the most left-leaning polls in California, this is great news!

This is good news. As to it being "bad" for Simon or the GOP, bear in mind that this is the SF Chronicle. If they can make it bad, they will. GoWardGo. Fight the hate and divisiveness of the left....

I don't understand how anyone could oppose this. This should have happened fifty years ago.

The patterns of support are strange.

Racial preferences affect blacks more than any other group, and they're against it at the same level as Whites and Hispanics. Why? It seems that the message must be out that preferences are simply not working. Or maybe they trust a black man to make that determination.

Hispanics probably support it because Proposition 209 has helped them, dumping the useless bilingual education and therefore giving them greater hope of fitting in.

And why are Asians against it? Asians often lose through reverse discrimination (Asians not being admitted to UC because there are too many smart Asians).

Jesse Jackson is going to hate this one, and he's going to use all of his publicity machine to kill it. But I suspect it will pass with overwhelming White + Hispanic support.

Isn't the Field Poll generally slanted to the left anyway? Could mean that support is even stronger.

The telephone survey was conducted April 19-25 among a representative sample of 546 registered California voters

Are these the same 546 telephone-answering, self-described "likely voters" who favored Davis over Simon in the Field poll results released last week? (the one which contradicted all other recent polls) If so, then the margin of support for this initiative may be even higher. What good news!
