GUNS PREVENT RAPE
Submitted to The Denver Post on April 30, 2002.
Editor:
In her letter of April 30, Dawn Heiser writes that rape happens not because women let their guard down, but because rapists are poorly educated in the area of human dignity. She states: "Instead of offering tips for women, the police could give tips to potential rapists."
Out in real life, a psychopath intent on rape will not be deterred by platitudinous tips from police and social workers. One "tip" that will drive home the point that rape does not pay is the business "tip" of whatever weapon their potential victims might be carrying at the moment of truth.
Am I suggesting that women be allowed to carry concealed guns in their purses? You bet I am. The more likely that a woman is packing heat in her purse, the less likely that some miscreant will want to mess with her. Gun laws only affect law-abiding citizens. Criminals are not deterred by frivolous laws, and they prefer their victims unarmed.
Police do not read tea leaves. They can only show up after a crime has been committed. The duty of crime prevention ultimately rests with an armed and vigilant citizenry. It is a travesty that governments want to deny us the God-given right to defend ourselves, and a greater travesty that so many people will relinquish this right to obtain some false sense of security.

Nothing changes a potential rapists mind like the prospect of the sudden acquisition of a second navel!

I only disagree with the point that a women should not carry a gun in her purse. With women's fashions the way they are the only change that has to be made so that a woman could carry it in a holster would be a suitable belt instead of the narrow, flimsy ones that are so common. If the woman is short in the torso, then a shoulder holster would be a better choice.

Nothing changes a potential rapists mind like the prospect of the sudden acquisition of a second navel! Or a third eye in the middle of the forehead or perhaps a high speed hollow pointed sex change.

I agree. Shoulder holster is the way to go. Fumbling in your purse wastes valuable seconds. And if their purse is anything like mine they would never be able to find anything smaller then a M-16 in there without dumping it out and sorting through it.
The only problem is that you need to wear a jacket or big shirt of some kind to conceal it.

Or the prospect of becoming a cyclops.

That should be her decision, and not the state's.

You might try a purse with a compartment for "it." My wife has several, but she won't use them, she doesn't like them. It doesn't matter, she can draw it out of a regular purse faster than I can draw from my hip.

Over on talk.politics.guns, a poster said gun control was evil, because it put 5'2", 100 lb women at a disadvantage, having to fight off 6'1" 200 lb rapists via hand to hand combat. A UK poster responded that it's better for a woman to be raped than for a rapist to be killed, because rapists are also "human lives".
I do not think the UK poster was trying to troll ; that's really what he believes. Lord only knows how many other gun control advocates think the same way but are smart enough not to express such opinions openly.

"Carry" purses work even better, slung over the shoulder, with the firearm in a separate, easily accessible compartment.

There was a case in point a few years ago in Albuquerque. Some potential rapist came up to a car at a stoplight, pulled the driver (male) out and reached for the passenger (girl.) The girl took a gun from the glove compartment and plugged the potential rapist. The number of rapes in that area were down for about six months.

Some of the carry purses have a strap that goes to the gun and when the purse is pulled, the gun is in the hand of the woman. I still consider all of these gimicks. The number of purse snatchers outnumber the rapists, so in my opinion, the gun belongs on the person and not in a separate "package" that can be taken or left apart from the user. There is also the possibility of children inspecting purses. Women's fashion designs have a far greater range than men's designs when it comes to hiding a weapon. Think about that the next time you see a man walking around in a photographer's vest.

First of all sorry for the long post. Yeah I agree with all those who feel that rapists get what they deserve. If that means that they get killed? All the better for the rest of society. Saves money in the long run as well as others lives. However, I disagree with needing to use a gun. Typically an attack is not going to present itself from far enough away for a person to have the reaction time to use a weapon and most rapes are committed by someone the victim knows either well or vaguely. Having said that, it's all fine and dandy to have a weapon to use but remember that very same weapon can be used against the victim. I have been doing alot of research in the area of women's self defense and I don't advocate weapons that are not already accessible. Guns are usually concealed and pepper sprays are not totally reliable. Using a gun could turn you from an intended victim to a murder suspect. I am not sure if you have the law that says you can only use force equal to that of the person committing the crime. In other words you can't shoot someone who is grabbing at you. Although a gun would make me think twice about any crime. Perhaps a rapists who either trys to commit rape or does rape someone should be castrated then allowed to be publicly beaten by women until...
